Position Overview
MScR Title: Development and Validation of Capillary Based Point of Care Biomarker Testing for Use in Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Funding
Fee waiver for home student 2 year part‑time, covering full tuition fees and laboratory consumable costs for the student, starting October 2026.
Part–Time MSc by Research (MSc R)
Part‑time Master of Science by Research at the University of Gloucestershire (Francis Close Hall and Oxstalls campuses) in collaboration with industry partner INUVI (Gloucester).
Project Background
Cardiac rehabilitation reduces mortality and improves quality of life for patients after a cardiovascular event. Emerging monitoring approaches, such as cardiovascular biomarkers, are understudied in this context. Our project aims to evaluate the reliability of capillary blood sampling compared with traditional venous sampling for measuring key cardiovascular biomarkers in cardiac rehabilitation patients. We will investigate the biomarkers’ association with clinical outcomes including response to rehabilitation, long‑term prognosis, and with indicators of cardiovascular health such as arterial stiffness and blood pressure.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct biochemical assays on a range of key and emerging biochemical markers and other physiological measurements such as arterial stiffness and blood pressure as part of a research team led by Dr Sarah Curtis, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science.
Eligibility
Applicants must be UK nationals and hold a relevant honours degree of at least a 2.1 standard or equivalent in Biomedical Science, Sport & Exercise Science, or a related field. A specific interest in cardiovascular disease and assay development is essential.
Application
Applicants are invited to apply; the role is currently open.
