This post is a 6-month secondment / Fixed Term development opportunity for the successful applicant to further enhance their skills within cancer care as part of the Acute Oncology Team in LUHFT. As the successful candidate you will learn to assess patients within the acute cancer setting and develop your knowledge of cancer patients with all types of solid tumours. You will be part of a proactive team in the continued development of the Acute Oncology team and will work alongside colleagues both inside and outside of LUHFT such as CCC, palliative care, ED, Acute Medicine, radiology and pathology ensuring the quality of patient care is maximised. This post is a development opportunity for the candidate to learn additional skills and role responsibilities of an Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist within the acute trust setting. The post holder will need to be flexible within the trust and able to learn their role across sites with all members of the AO Team within LUHFT. The Acute Oncology Team core hours are Monday - Friday 8am until 4pm (excluding bank holidays).
Responsibilities
* Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
* Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment &/or diagnosis &/or treatment where competent.
* Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
* Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services.
* Monitor investigation results, initiating further assessment/review of treatment pathway as required.
* Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
* Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives, and professionals across health and social services.
* Provide support and advice for patients admitted acutely unwell with cancer treatment related symptoms or complications from a previous cancer (if referred to AOT initially for advice will be re‑referred to the original treating oncologist for further intervention as required).
* Provide support with teaching and update sessions regarding oncology, chemotherapy and side effects.
* Provide a liaison service to ensure patients are referred as required to most appropriate area (Palliative Care, Oncology, Haematology and other Cancer Specific areas).
* Assist in reducing inappropriate oncology admissions and reduce overall length of stay.
* Support clinical teams for patients admitted acutely unwell with toxicities of cancer related treatment, progression of cancer or newly diagnosed cancers.
* Ensure ongoing professional development so that your own skills and knowledge of cancer care are up to date.
Required Qualifications
* Registered Nurse or Midwife.
* Post‑basic specialist qualification relevant to speciality.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
Desirable Qualifications
* Recordable specialist qualification.
* Independent Nurse Prescribing.
* ECDL, post‑registration experience.
* Extensive clinical experience.
* Involvement in audit.

Additional Requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing the successful applicant/s DBS application be recovered via salary deduction following start in post. The amount of £26.50 (standard disclosure) or £54.50 (enhanced disclosure) will be deducted from salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment. Bank posts require upfront payment.
