A forward-thinking local authority is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Specialist Officer to join their Private Sector Housing team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a varied and rewarding role, supporting the health and wellbeing of residents through proactive housing inspections, enforcement, and improvement initiatives.
Your new role
Hours: [Specify hours] per week (Pro rata)
Salary: £20,588 – £22,221 per annum (based on FTE £34,314 – £37,035)
1. Inspect private sector housing using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
2. Prepare schedules, notices, and enforcement actions to address hazards and non-compliance
3. Support delivery of Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) and housing assistance packages
4. Assess and license Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
5. Investigate complaints and respond to service requests
6. Contribute to empty homes and corporate risk work, including fire risk assessments
7. Liaise with landlords, tenants, letting agents, and other stakeholders
What you'll need to succeed
* HNC in Building Studies, Environmental Health, or equivalent experience
* Strong knowledge of housing legislation, building construction, and enforcement procedures
* Experience working with vulnerable clients and managing sensitive situations
* Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a team
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to access roof spaces and ladders
* Experience with DFGs, HMO licensing, and empty homes strategies
* Familiarity with CAD systems, benefits systems, and means testing
* Knowledge of fire safety and energy performance standards
