English teacher

Offer description

The Opportunity Wolverhampton is a city of historic industry and significant cultural regeneration, serving as a vital hub within the West Midlands’ creative and educational landscape. We are seeking an intellectually ambitious English Teacher to join an Ofsted-rated 'Outstanding' secondary academy. In this role, you will inspire students to master the power of language and the depth of literature—from the classic canon to contemporary voices—understanding that high-level literacy is the ultimate gateway to social mobility and critical thinking in the 21st century. The Department & Literary Culture You will join a high-performing English faculty where the subject is celebrated as the heartbeat of the school’s academic and cultural life. The department fosters a "discourse-heavy" environment, encouraging students to engage in rigorous textual analysis, sophisticated debate, and creative expression. As an "Outstanding" setting, we prioritise a curriculum that balances technical grammatical precision with a deep, empathetic exploration of diverse narratives and perspectives. We maintain active links with regional theatre groups and literary organisations, providing students with unique opportunities for workshops, poetry slams, and live performance experiences. Core Responsibilities Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge English Language and Literature lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with significant opportunities for A-Level instruction (English Literature or English Language) for suitably qualified candidates. Textual Inquiry: Guiding students through the interrogation of complex texts, fostering the ability to identify nuanced themes, structural choices, and the socio-political contexts of diverse authors. Written Eloquence: Systematically developing students' ability to write with clarity, flair, and purpose, whether for academic analysis, persuasive rhetoric, or creative storytelling. Data-Driven Progress: Utilising the academy’s robust assessment framework to provide granular feedback, ensuring students are equipped to meet the high demands of AQA, Edexcel, or Eduqas specifications. Oracy Leadership: Coordinating extra-curricular initiatives, such as debating societies, school newspapers, or "World Book Day" celebrations, to promote a vibrant culture of literacy across the academy. The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject authority who believes that the study of English is essential for developing informed, articulate, and empathetic citizens. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in English Literature, English Language, or a closely related discipline. Proven Track Record: Evidence of delivering exceptional learning outcomes at GCSE and A-Level, with a deep understanding of terminal examination requirements and assessment objectives. Pedagogical Flair: The ability to bring a wide range of texts to life, making the microscopic details of language and the macroscopic themes of literature accessible to all learners. Reflective Practice: A professional committed to continuous growth, eager to participate in collaborative planning and the development of world-class teaching resources. Why Join Us? The chance to work in an "Outstanding" environment where student behaviour is exemplary and English is held in the highest academic regard. Unrivalled professional development pathways, including opportunities for middle leadership and specialised training in advanced pedagogical techniques. The opportunity to work in Wolverhampton—a city offering a unique blend of heritage, vibrant community life, and immediate access to the beautiful Shropshire and Staffordshire countryside. A prestigious professional community that values innovation, intellectual ambition, and the holistic development of every student.
