Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Street Lighting Engineer/Technician to join our national Intelligent Mobility (IM) team to support the delivery of an expanding project portfolio of lighting design services across the UK and internationally. This role will work to provide technical advice and design services to deliver street lighting and electrical designs that are safe, efficient and follow good working practices to help balance the needs of the economy, environment and society.

While the ideal candidate has a minimum of 5 years street lighting design experience, we are open to those who would like to broaden their skills in other key areas of the IM business such as urban, inter-urban intelligent transport systems and tunnel services. Training and mentoring will be provided for career development across a range of disciplines.

Maintaining road safety during hours of darkness is often at the forefront of lighting implementation. Designers deliver external lighting designs that provide the right light in the right place at the right time to support energy reduction, de-carbonisation targets and minimise environmental impact, often through intelligent control and integration with other technology systems.

Is this role for you?

The role includes modelling lighting designs using luminance and illuminance criteria, preparation of design drawings, schematics and schedules, compiling technical specifications, BS 7671 calculations, impact assessment and risk assessments, and fulfilling CDM design duties. The successful candidate will undertake a range of roles within a team delivering major projects or serve as the designated lighting specialist for smaller projects to support leadership development.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide technical support to the existing IM team through project delivery and lead technical input for small lighting projects
* Enhance Arup’s profile with key clients, including the Department for Transport (DfT), National Highways, international clients, and private-sector clients
* Support and lead to ensure delivery of projects within agreed timescales and budgets, driving teams to deliver technical excellence
* Contribute to a wide range of projects and bids across business areas and within the wider Arup network, including international opportunities
* Ensure all designs and documentation meet the highest professional standards
* Keep up to date with industry and technical developments and changes
* Perform a variety of design roles and technical consultancy
* Work with IM leadership to support the development and implementation of a work-winning plan to create a case for team growth in the UK region

Requirements

* Minimum of HND or BSc in a STEM subject
* Desirable ILP Diploma in External Lighting
* Member of relevant professional institution(s)
* Working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, support will be provided in gaining accreditation
* Good working knowledge of BS 5489 and BS 7671
* Experience with Lighting Reality and other lighting design packages
* Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD
* Understanding of DMRB & MCHW suite of specifications and guidance notes
