As Associate Lecturer You Will Teach The Modules
* Knowledge and Reality
* 30 hours teaching
* Tuesdays 30 September to 9 December 2025
* Morality, Society and Politics
* 30 hours teaching
* Tuesdays 13 January to 24 March 2026
* Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science
* 15 hours teaching
* Mondays between 12 January and 23 March 2026 (dates to be confirmed)
* The Ethics of Life and Death: Humans, Animals and the Environment
* 15 hours teaching
* Wednesdays between 14 January and 25 March 2026 (dates to be confirmed)
Your role will be to deliver teaching (lectures) to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties as required.
As Associate Lecturer, you will have in-depth knowledge of the discipline of Philosophy, specific to the topic area noted above – Epistemology and Metaphysics (for Knowledge and Reality), Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science (for that course), and Moral and Political Philosophy (for Morality, Society and Politics and for The Ethics of Life and Death), and experience of both research and teaching within the HE context in this field.
You should also have a PhD (or equivalent level) in an appropriate specialism, or to be close to completion.
You Will Also Teach The Module
* The History and Foundations of AI
* 30 hours teaching
* Wednesdays 14 January to 25 March 2026
You will have in-depth knowledge of the history of AI (including key figures and intellectual movements), its theoretical foundations, and its applications. An ability to convey this information clearly to non-technical audiences is crucial.
Further to the person specification, essential requirements for these roles are:
* A PhD (or equivalent level) in an appropriate specialism or to be close to completion.
* A good developing track record of research in the field.
* Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods, and experience in working with students from a range of backgrounds.
* Effective oral and written communication skills.

Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
