Relationships are at the heart of what we do. We aim to support a University of Canterbury law student who values a firm offering down-to-earth and practical advice.
We are looking for someone who:
* Has one or two years remaining in their law studies at the University of Canterbury.
* Loves the Canterbury region and its contribution to our economy.
* Can demonstrate contributions beyond academic results.
* Sees their future in a big firm with a difference.
To apply, you should be in your third or fourth year of study (with one or two years remaining). We value students who love the Canterbury region and can demonstrate a wider contribution than just academic results—such as being an organiser, campaigner, entrepreneur, high-performing competitor, speaker, or similar. Do you see your future in a big firm with a difference?
As a Duncan Cotterill law scholarship recipient, you will receive:
* $3,000 per year towards your studies while completing your law degree.
* Summer and winter clerking opportunities at our Christchurch office starting November 2025.
* Dedicated partner and peer support.
* Invitations to social and educational programmes throughout the year.
We provide comprehensive training, including in-house, external, and on-the-job opportunities. Our graduates and solicitors participate in tailored training programmes, forums discussing legal issues, and regular educational sessions from experienced lawyers.
Beyond training, our firm offers:
* Involvement in client work from day one.
* Exposure to a variety of legal work.
* Internal and external training opportunities.
* A vibrant social programme.
We also encourage participation in social events like touch rugby, yoga, book groups, and tennis, and promote community involvement through pro bono work and community events.
With 166 years of mentoring aspiring lawyers, we are committed to helping you succeed. Join us on your journey.

Pros and cons of working at Duncan Cotterill
Pros
The firm engages in complex projects, allowing grads to contribute to strategy discussions and observe senior lawyers in action. Emphasis on wellbeing and work-life balance is genuine. Mentoring, interesting work, and a social office culture are highlights.
Cons
Potentially slightly lower earnings compared to other firms, occasional disorganisation, limited out-of-work culture, and variable support levels. Pay disparities exist for grads in different locations.
