Role: Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Bristol, UK (Hybrid Working)
An employee-owned high voltage electrical engineering consultancy delivering power infrastructure, grid connections, and renewable energy projects across the UK. The business supports clients from early-stage design through to construction, combining technical excellence with a strong safety-first culture and long-term career development.
Due to continued growth in high voltage and renewable energy projects, we are expanding our in-house Engineering team and are seeking Electrical Design Engineers at various levels. Reporting to the Design Manager, you will be responsible for the design of high voltage electrical infrastructure from concept through to construction, ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety legislation, and client requirements.
This role offers structured training, exposure to complex grid and substation projects, and clear progression within a supportive, employee-owned environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Design high voltage electrical infrastructure from 11kV to 132kV, including substations and associated equipment.
* Produce primary design outputs such as layouts, equipment specifications, busbar arrangements, and general arrangement drawings.
* Deliver Protection & Control designs including SLDs, schematics, relay settings, and coordination studies.
* Undertake HV cable design, ampacity calculations, and verification using industry-standard tools.
* Perform and review power system studies including load flow, fault level, protection coordination, and harmonics.
* Complete earthing designs and review third-party designs where required.
* Prepare detailed design packs including schematics, cable schedules, calculations, and technical reports.
* Ensure all designs prioritise safety and comply with CDM and Health & Safety regulations.
* Liaise with clients, consultants, DNOs/TNOs, and internal delivery teams to support successful project delivery.
* Attend site visits, surveys, inspections, and factory acceptance tests as required.
Skills & Experience
* Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
* Experience in electrical design within utilities, grid connections, renewables, or electrical contracting environments.
* Strong technical grounding in power systems and high voltage design.
* Experience in one or more of the following: substations, Protection & Control, cable design, earthing, or system studies.
* Familiarity with tools such as Digsilent PowerFactory, Cymcap, CDEGS, or equivalent.
* Ability to manage multiple design tasks and meet project deadlines.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to justify design decisions.
* Working towards or holding professional registration (IEng or CEng) is desirable.
