The Renal Day unit is open Monday through to Friday, from 07:30 to 20:00 hrs.
Main duties of the job
The expectations within this job description will be met through professional leadership, clinical management, hands on clinical practice, education and training, and research.
The post holder will ensure that high quality nursing care is delivered within their designated clinical area.
The post holder will set the standards of clinical practice, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, and will monitor patient outcomes.
To support and deputise for the Renal Day Unit Manager to ensure the provision of excellent nursing care and the effective management of staff and other resources.
To carry out the day-to-day management and co-ordination of the Renal Day Unit
To ensure that there are education and training opportunities for all staff, including pre and post registration students and /or providing specialist knowledge if working in a clinical area where a post registration course is essential.
To ensure highly specialised nursing treatment and care is delivered to the patients at all times. Refers and orders specialised tests in line with agreed protocols and clinical governance guidelines. To assist in the development of evidence based practice in the renal service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1.1Establish high standards and evidence-based care are delivered at all times by regularly monitoring and evaluating patient outcomes.
1.2Monitors the quality of care delivered using clinical standards and takes necessary action to lead on improvements.
1.3Ensure that care is patient-focused and that patient dignity and privacy are always maintained.
1.4Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced.
1.5Practices in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and other appropriate NMC guidelines.
1.6Lead the ward team in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
1.7Will have responsibility for the designated clinical area, in particular the effective staffing of that area in both the short term (shift by shift) and medium term (well planned rotas).
1.8Able to assess the short term and the medium-term clinical needs of the area and plans to ensure that they are met. Will seek advice and support from outside the clinical area when necessary.
1.9Manage the Renal Day Unit in the absence of the Manager/ Matron. Coordinate the clinical team and delegate duties as appropriate, maintaining safe staffing levels, inform senior staff of any problems or incidents that might arise.
1.10Ensures that all clinical and legal nursing documents are completed accurately and legibly, and that their relevance is understood by junior staff.
1.11Represents and supports patients, relatives or carers at multidisciplinary (multi organisational) meetings and case conferences, ensuring that their needs are represented and that appropriate care packages are developed.
1.12Liaises and works in collaboration with nursing and other healthcare professions, patients and their relatives / carers to assist in the timely discharge from the RDU through appropriate discharge planning in conjunction with the Discharge Co-ordinators.
1.13Will use reflective practice as a method of ensuring that appropriate effective nursing care is delivered to each patient.
1.14Ensure that prescribed medications are safely administered and to monitor, report and investigate all medication errors.
1.15Ensure competency in use and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.
1.16Reports all incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately, investigates and implements remedial action to reduce the risk in the future.
1.17Ensures that all complaints are listened to and that issues identified are addressed, with the aim of resolving all complaints locally. The focus on prevention and local resolution of complaints must be part of the ward team philosophy.
1.18Promote a professional image at all times and be accountable for own clinical practice.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
1. Registered General Nurse
2. Diploma in Nursing
3. Post registration course in relevant speciality, e.g MABs,
4. Practice Assessor/ Mentorship course
5. Accredited renal course or equivalent
Desirable criteria
6. Nursing degree or working towards
7. Management/leadership training/course
8. Acutely Unwell Adult course or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
9. Minimum of two years’ experience in renal nursing
10. Experience and knowledge of Transplantation, Haemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Nephrology
11. Experience of Shift management
Desirable criteria
12. iClip and computer experience
