Ward 15 is the Vascular Specialist Hub for North & Central Lancashire region. We are a 18 bedded Vascular ward in the heart of Preston Hospital and pride ourselves on our friendly and inclusive team ethos.

We provide diagnostics and treatment, Pre and Post operatively for Vascular patients with both acute and chronic Vascular problems, offering patient education, advice and support.

We are a warm and diverse team and can offer you a full induction package, specialised vascular training and the opportunity to explore career pathways supported by our MDT, clinical nurse specialists and clinical educators.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for providing a range of personalised nursing care for patients and a range of clinical dutiesunder the guidance and supervision of the Team Leader/Nurse in charge. Day to day duties include but are not exclusive to, medication administration, holistic patient care, discharge planning and liaising with families, pressure area care, wound dressings and many other duties of nursing, including Vac therapy, complex dressings, Larvae therapy, Vascular Critical Care step downs, epidurals and working along side our student nursing team offering teaching and learning opportunities to them.

Experience of working with Surgical patients in a hospital setting would be beneficial, however it is not essential.

You will need to be flexible in your working hours to work shifts/unsocial hours including nights as required. You must have a willingness to undertake further training to support the team in the management of patients with Vascular conditions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Contribute to the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence-based guidelines under supervision.

-Support and provide patient education and health promotion.

-Support the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice.

-Contribute to the management of risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.

-Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.

-Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.

-Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.

-Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.

-Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.

-Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

-Maintain and develop own professional competence and skills within scope of role.

-Actively participates in the appraisal and Personal development planning process as reviewee.

-Proactively supports Trust wide or local changes and developments in nursing practice e.g intentional rounding, alcohol screening as directed etc.

-Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

1. Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
2. Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
3. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
4. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
5. Demonstrates competency during internship

Desirable criteria

6. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
7. Knowledge of Leadership and Management
8. Research and Development
9. Knowledge of ethical issues

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

10. Appropriate NMC Registration
11. Diploma in Nursing
12. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
13. Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses

Desirable criteria
