Offer description

This Fellowship is an innovative position open to anaesthetic and Intensive Care Medicine trainees. This is a year-long post and may be undertaken as in or out of programme training, dependent upon discussion with the candidate’s training programme director. Applicants applying for the post must satisfy the following: • Full GMC registration. • 2 years anaesthetic experience • CRB clearance • Experience of Quality Improvement work • Basic understanding of Quality Improvement methodology We are one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England with a workforce of approximately 14,500 employees including clinicians, non-clinical support workers, clinical and non-clinical leaders and staff. UHL has developed an exciting new quality strategy ‘Becoming the Best’ with a drive towards embedding quality improvement in the everyday work of all staff. A new quality improvement fellow would be placed to contribute to this ‘improvement movement’. The quality improvement methodology involved in ‘Becoming the Best’ focusses on the ‘Model for Improvement’, developed and promoted by a number of leading authorities in the subject, including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and NHS Improvement. Within ITAPS the Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme has begun data collection, giving ample opportunity for development of high-quality improvement projects. The department is moving towards RCOA ACSA accreditation, again providing excellent prospects for quality improvement projects. The Fellow will be a QI champion within the department. They will be expected to lead multidisciplinary quality improvement projects and provide peer support for trainees undertaking similar. The nature of the QI project will be determined by the interests of the fellow and the requirements of the department. There will be opportunities to be involved with the Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme and the Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation. It is anticipated that work produced from these projects will be of a standard to present at national level. Our new strategy, 'Leading in healthcare, trusted in communities' was developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners and is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030). We have four primary goals: • high-quality care for all, • being a great place to work, • partnerships for impact, and • research and education excellence And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities. Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all: • we are compassionate, • we are proud, • we are inclusive, and • we are one team This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve. Supervision The fellow will be assigned a clinical supervisor who will oversee work during their clinical duties. Assessment The fellow will be expected to provide a portfolio of evidence of their work during the placement as well as undertake work-place based assessments in keeping with Annex G from the RCOA curriculum. Clinical Responsibilities The fellow will undertake clinical duties in theatres, Intensive Care or delivery suite within the University Hospitals of Leicester Trust. The majority of normal working days will be dedicated to QI and management work. On call duties will be undertaken in the assigned clinical area. The on-call rota will be resident 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 rota, shifts of 12.5hrs with consultant presence at handover. This advert closes on Tuesday 3 Mar 2026
