Commercial Manager / Commercial Estimating Engineer

We're recruiting for a Commercial Manager / Commercial Estimating Engineer to join a well-established precision engineering company supplying into the aerospace sector. This is a key, hands-on role combining commercial leadership, estimating, and technical customer engagement, ideal for an engineer with strong commercial acumen.
You'll take ownership of customer enquiries from initial quote through to contract completion, ensuring accurate costing, strong customer relationships, and profitable delivery.
The Role
This role sits at the heart of the business, evaluating customer requirements for machined components and assemblies, producing accurate and competitive estimates, and managing contracts through their full lifecycle. You'll work closely with customers, production, and the supply chain to ensure a "right first time" approach to quoting and contract delivery.
Key Responsibilities
1. Evaluate customer enquiries for machined components and assemblies
2. Produce accurate manufacturing cost estimates and quotations within agreed timescales
3. Develop optimal manufacturing methods from drawings or digital data
4. Create clear, detailed quotes with supporting technical narratives
5. Project manage new business, including project plans and documentation
6. Conduct thorough contract reviews, ensuring all materials, specifications, and requirements are captured
7. Perform quick-load assessments for new orders
8. Take ownership of customer contracts from quote through to completion
9. Liaise technically with customers and act as a key commercial contact
10. Negotiate raw material pricing and manage supplier relationships, including sourcing new subcontract processes
11. Provide technical support on methods, tooling, and manufacturing approach
12. Monitor contract profitability and work with production and supply chain on pricing reviews and cost control
13. Drive continuous improvement, focusing on quality, delivery, and cost reduction
14. Keep customers informed on progress and commercial matters
15. Ensure all safety, quality, and conduct procedures are followed
16. Support colleagues and promote best practice across the business
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
17. Strong mechanical engineering background
18. Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical data
19. Experience in precision machining or subcontract engineering (highly advantageous)
20. Commercial awareness with experience in estimating, quoting, or account management
21. Confident communicator, both written and verbal, at all levels
22. Good IT literacy
23. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing / Continuous Improvement techniques advantageous
24. Experience managing customer accounts within an engineering environment beneficial
25. Proactive, flexible, and solutions-focused with a strong work ethic
