Head of Design and Consultancy Services - Lightning Protection & Earthing
Kingsmill Industries are a leading manufacturer of earthing, lightning and surge protection solutions, both in the United Kingdom and globally. We are seeking a Head of Design & Consultancy Services who has a passion for challenges and problem-solving to join our team in Pinxton. Your experience of designing earth grid solutions, UK legislation and use of CEDEGS software will be our bedrock. Your primary focus will be to build a UK based team of engineers, capable of supporting our clients with cost-effective solutions and designs for earthing projects, conduct lightning risk assessments and create sustainable and optimised lightning protection and earthing designs for power utilities, industrial and commercial applications. The role involves liaising with architects, chief engineers and site personnel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Head of Design will be responsible for developing our Consultancy Services Team, from marketing strategy, staff recruitment and liaising with clients, to provide leading edge advice related to simulation, design, and measurement of earthing and lightning protection systems. The role involves preparing and reviewing comprehensive reports, conducting safety assessments, as well as providing technical recommendations tailored to the client’s site conditions. Driving Design Excellence in the UK through managing and developing client training sessions. The candidate will also be responsible for recruiting, training and building a world class UK team, as well as liaising with our Support Teams based in the Middle East.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Develop client focused training presentations
* Recruit and train staff
* Conduct lightning risk assessments and design both internal and external lightning protection systems.
* Manage power earthing system projects for both LV and HV infrastructures, ensuring compliance with international standards such as IEC, BSI, and IEEE.
* Utilize advanced software tools (e.g., CDEGS suite) for complex calculations and simulations.
* Request and analyse technical input data, communicate results, and address client queries effectively.
* Perform site visits for data collection, testing, and earthing system inspection, including soil resistivity measurements.
* Assist in developing designs for earthing and lightning protection systems, ensuring optimal safety and efficiency.
* Collaborate with our international team to ensure that project objectives are met effectively and efficiently.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
This role provides valuable hands-on experience and offers a superb opportunity to advance your career and take a key role in the leading and building of our Consultancy Services activity. Ideal candidates should have a background in Electrical Engineering (a Masters degree or higher is preferred), a knowledge of civil and mechanical engineering would be advantageous. Candidates with college-level education or equivalent experience will also be considered if they can demonstrate proven expertise in the field.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
* Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to challenges.
* Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and MS Office.
* Experience with CDEGS software and familiarity with EMTP/ATP for transient analysis.
* Knowledge of lightning protection systems design.
* Willingness and ability to travel in the UK for site visits as required; fieldwork may involve working at heights.
* Understanding of safe working practices, including risk assessments and method statements.
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
* Full valid driving license.
* Prior experience in modelling earth grids using CEDEGS, site survey and customer focused presentation experience is a must.
