Consultant Oncologist - Urology and Thyroid

Swansea University Health Board is seeking to appoint to a 10 session Clinical Oncologist post in Urological and Thyroid cancers, who has a commitment to high quality patient care, high level research, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets and excellence in education/training. The post-holder will be responsible for the delivery of SACT and radiotherapy including radioiodine therapy for the above tumour sites as well as expanding a trials portfolio in these cancers for the patients of the South West Wales Cancer Centre. It is hoped the candidate will become and ARSAC license holder. The postholder will be joining a friendly and forward-thinking consultant team of clinical and medical oncologists who are committed to delivering highest standards of cancer care, alongside a large team of other clinical and non-clinical professionals


Main duties of the job

Urology The postholder will provide a comprehensive non -surgical oncology service (SACT and RT) for patients with urological cancer (prostate and bladder). The postholder with work closely with the surgical team based at Morriston Hospital. The postholder will join a team of 3 clinical oncologists and 4 medical oncologists delivering non -surgical treatment for prostate, bladder and renal cancers across South West Wales.

The postholder would see approximately 160 new patients a year

Thyroid The postholder will be an integral member of the thyroid team, working alongside surgical, CNS and nuclear medicine colleagues to deliver Radioactive Iodine, SACT and palliative RT to patients with thyroid cancer. The postholder will be expected to work towards a ARSAC license in delivering RAI. There is one thyroid cancer CNS working specifically in oncology and one CNS working across surgery and oncology. Both undertake nurse led clinics. The South Wales thyroid MDT is hosted by Cardiff and Vale with Swansea oncologists joining remotely via MS teams. There is also a RAI service run by a Clinical Oncologist in Velindre Cancer Centre, 40 miles away and the expectation is that the two will provide mutual cross cover. The postholder will see approximately 10-15 new patients/year.

The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals.

The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered with the GMC
* Licensed to practice
* On Specialist Register with GMC as a Clinical Oncologist or eligible for CCT within 6 months of date of interview and have passed exit exam or a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB or a primary medical qualification and recognized specialist qualification from a European Member State which will allow direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register
* FRCR


Experience

* Evidence of an ability to develop effective working relationships, on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff ("Working Together")
* Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve a service ("Always Improving")
* Values partnership with other agencies ("Working Together")
