Substance Misuse Nurse Associate

Job overview

The Registered Nurse Associate role is an essential role for the Secured Services environment. The post holder will work alongside a multi‑disciplinary team to provide highest quality patient‑centred care, contributing to the physical health care and participating in ongoing assessment and implementation of planned and emergency care over a 24/7 period that meets patient needs.

The post holder will work in an integrated multi‑professional inpatient team that includes Head of Healthcare, Clinical Matrons, Service Managers, ACPs, GPs, Registered Nurses, Healthcare Support Workers, Pharmacy Technicians, Administrators, and Mental health and Substance misuse staff.

Please note this post is subject to security vetting. Applicants must have continuously resided in the UK for a minimum of 3 years before application and be able to evidence residency; lack of sufficient evidence may halt progress.


Main duties of the job

* Work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team across Physical Health, Mental Health and Substance Misuse pathways.
* Support safe prescribing of medication, including acting as a 1st signatory under the supervision of a registered nurse.
* Support emergency responses and coded calls.
* Manage own caseload under indirect supervision of a registered nurse.
* Support delivery of the overall service delivery model for the pathway.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Registered Nurse Associate role bridges the gap between Healthcare Support Workers and Registered Nurses, professionally regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

* Contribute to assessment of needs, planning, evaluation and review of individualised programmes of care.
* Maintain own caseload of patients under indirect supervision of a registered nurse, providing patient‑centred care.
* Accurately update electronic patient records in line with Trust expectations.
* Undertake and record patient assessments, including physical observations, ECGs, venepuncture, and use of clinical tools such as COWS, CIWA, and alcohol AUDIT.
* Use professional judgement to deliver and modify interventions and treatments for individual programmes of care on a 1:1 and group basis.
* Work independently and as part of a team, organising workload and meeting competing demands.
* Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team and support junior staff.
* Deliver high quality physical and psychosocial care to diverse patients.
* Manage patient concerns and applications in line with Trust policy.
* Safely manage and administer medication as required by the service area, following supervised practice and medication competency sign‑off.
* Facilitate induction programmes for newly appointed junior colleagues.
* Assist senior staff with staff appraisals, development of objectives, and provide regular supervision.
* Engage in pathway complex‑case and multidisciplinary meetings, handovers and training sessions; remain up‑to‑date with required training and supervision.


Person specification


Knowledge and Experience

* Active Nurse Associate registration with the NMC.
* Previous experience in a prison/secured setting.
* Demonstrated understanding of healthcare provision in a prison/secured setting.


Clinical Skills

* Qualified and experienced in clinical procedures including venepuncture and ECG.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Experience of medication administration as 1st signatory under supervision of a registered nurse.
* Experience of working in a variety of healthcare pathways such as substance misuse, mental health.
* Experience of delivering group‑based interventions for patients.
* Experience of managing own caseload of patients with diverse treatment needs.
