A quick look at the role
This is an exciting time for Health and Safety function as we significantly invest in and expand the function. We have several Health & Safety Manager roles serving the 'Centre of Excellence' across the country. Your technical capability and experience will enable you to act as a subject matter expert in relation to particular aspects of the management of H&S at work. In practice, your portfolio could include, but wouldn’t necessarily be limited to topics such as assurance, governance, policy, standards, skills & competence, and continuous improvement.
Your core responsibilities
1. Provide subject matter expertise as part of the H&S ‘Centre of Excellence’ to ensure Biffa can continually reduce the likelihood and severity of workplace harm, with a ‘yes, if’ approach.
2. Develop and implement Biffa-wide programmes in relation to your area of expertise or assigned portfolio to ensure our systems and standards are fit for purpose.
3. Participate in (and lead where instructed) investigations into serious incidents or high potential events.
4. Participate in (and lead where instructed) internal audits of the effectiveness of our H&S management system (GIMS) and other assurance activity.
5. Collaborate with other Group functions to ensure H&S systems and approaches are integrated with Biffa’s overarching plans, systems, and strategies.
6. Use, maintain, support, develop and work to continually improve systems such as EcoOnline.
7. When required, support the business in ‘work winning’ activities which could include direct input to tender submissions, customer presentations and the completion of accreditation schemes.
8. Represent Biffa on external bodies and working groups, including (but not necessarily limited to) ESA and WISH.
9. Play an active role in the development and implementation of an effective H&S communications plan working with the Group Communications team and L&OD.
Our essential requirements
* Level 3 NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
* Technical or Certified member of IOSH
* Minimum 5 years’ experience as a H&S practitioner
* Demonstrable experience in undertaking audits to ISO45001
* Demonstrable experience in leading internal investigations into serious and/or complex incidents
* Experience of implementing improvements in large, complex organizations in at least one of the following areas: Assurance & governance; Policy & standards; Skills & competence and/or Continuous improvement
