Job overview

The Divisional Clinical Educator plays a leadership role in ensuring the consistent delivery of high‑quality, safe, and compassionate care across Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust. The post‑holder will work collaboratively with clinical teams to support the development, competence, and confidence of our workforce, helping to create a positive learning culture that places patient experience and safety at its centre.

This role requires a proactive, innovative, and collaborative approach to education, ensuring that learning is not only responsive to service needs but also anticipatory - identifying gaps, emerging themes, and opportunities for improvement before they impact patient care.

Working across clinical areas, the Divisional Clinical Educator will provide hands‑on support, coaching, and guidance to staff in real time. They will also design and facilitate teaching sessions and bespoke study days informed by incidents, audits, patient feedback, and service priorities.

They will be accountable for the standards of clinical practice, including the skills they perform and teach, the quality and safety of education delivered, and the activities undertaken in practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to:

·To deliver practice-based education for clinical nursing care across the Medicine Division.

·Support the development of bespoke study days and targeted education.

·Ensure all educational content is evidence‑based, current, and aligned with Trust policies, national guidance, and professional standards.

·Provide direct support within clinical areas.

·Demonstrate clinical practice and act as a visible, accessible role model promoting safe, compassionate, and effective care.

·Be accountable for the standards of clinical practice undertaken and taught, ensuring skills delivered in practice meet professional, Trust, and national requirements.

·Ensure the quality, safety, and accuracy of all education and clinical learning activities provided.

·Maintain appropriate documentation relating to teaching, supervision, and competency assessments.

·Work collaboratively with matrons, ward leaders, divisional teams, the wider education workforce, and external partners to develop a positive, proactive learning culture.

·Contribute to Trust‑wide initiatives related to education, safety, and quality improvement.

·Stay informed of national policy, evidence, and emerging best practice in both education and clinical care.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

2. Professional Nursing Registration,
3. Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment history
4. Currently working primarily with adult patients
5. Aware of current issues within nursing and health care at local and national levels

Desirable criteria

6. Leadership & management training
7. Teaching qualification/Mentorship

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

8. Extensive post registration experience clinical experience within an acute hospital or relevant speciality with strong evidence of leadership and organisational skills
9. Experience in change management
10. Experience in developing nursing practice
11. Experience working in a busy general ward

Desirable criteria

12. Experience delivering teaching, skills training, or educational support at ward or department level
13. Prior involvement in clinical audit, research, service evaluation or quality improvement project

Skills & Ability

Essential criteria

14. Highly developed interpersonal skills and able to develop effective relationships with a wide range of professionals and learners both within and outside of the organisation
15. Coordinates and prioritises own workload of patients when working in clinical practice and can mentor others to do the same
16. Able to readily adapt between working independently and within a team
17. Proficient in the ability to assess patients, analyse situations, intervene appropriately whilst maintaining patient advocacy and ensuring staff support all in a timely manner

Desirable criteria

18. Ability to identify learning needs and implement targeted, outcome-focused educational interventions
19. Confidence using digital platforms for education

20. Should be able to work across all three HHFT sites
21. Demonstrates resilience, emotional intelligence, and the ability to support teams during clinical or organisational challenges
