Job Title: Shift Operations Manager

Role Overview

TheShift OperationsManagersupportstheShiftProductionManager intheeffective leadership and coordination ofa specified shiftproductionteam.

The roleensuresthatmaintenance,repair,andoperationalactivities aredelivered safely, accurately, and efficiently tomeetcontractualperformancelevels,including Safety,Reliability, Productivity,and TrainAvailability.

The postholder contributesto creatinga safeworkingenvironment,maintaininghighengineering standards, promoting continuous improvement,and supportingsmooth operationaldeliveryon a24/7basis.


Key Responsibilities:


People & Team Leadership

* Leadand coordinateadedicatedteamoftechnicians,fitters,and assistants todeliver maintenanceand repair activitieson rolling stock.
* Support safe workingpractices andensure activitiesmeet safety, quality,and performance standards.
* Assistwith people-relatedprocesses including welfare,annualleave,occupationalhealth,and appraisals.
* Maintaina strongdaily presenceon the shopfloor,monitoringprogressand addressing issuesquickly,
* Supportallocationofworkissued by the SPMinlinewith maintenanceplans,work arising,andenhancedtasks.
* Carry outmaintenance,fault-finding, repairs, investigations,andinspections asrequired.
* Ensurelocal processes arefollowed (tooling, COSHH,parts handling, tagging,documentation).
* Provide guidance, coaching, and technical supporttocolleagues.
* Answertechnicalqueriesand support interactionswiththeClientwhererequired.
* Promoteeffectiveteamwork, positive communication,and collaborative problem-solving.
* Supportpersonaldevelopmentand competencemaintenancefor selfandteam members.


Operational, Technical & Quality Responsibilities

* Supportthedevelopment,implementation,andadherence toStadlerstandards,procedures, andlegislative requirements.
* Deliver workinaccordancewithworkinstructions, safety procedures,andengineering bestpractice.
* Maintainaccuratedocumentation (jobcards, defect logs, workorders),ensuring recordsmeet compliance standards.
* Carry out inspections,in-process evaluations, and conditionassessments to ensureworkqualityand safety.
* Undertake conditionmonitoring activitiesand useavailable analytical systems(e.g. RDS, OTMR).
* Monitorunitand fleetperformance,participatingininvestigationsinto repeat defectsandtechnicalincidents.
* Supportfeedback loopsand lessons-learned processes to preventrecurringissues.
* Provide technical input toimprovementinitiativesledby OPEX/PerformanceEngineers or depotteams.
* Assist SPMandOMARM inimprovingSRMS accuracy includingworkflow,processing,andasset exchanges.
* Contribute tothe creationor updating ofwork instructions and safetydocumentation whenrequired.

* Ensure compliancewithallsafety-criticalrequirements,includingworkingtimeregulationsand substance-misuse rules.

* Escalate risks, non-conformances, or safety concernspromptlyand supportmitigation actions.
* Participate in improvementprojects, initiatives,and cross-functionalworkinggroups.
* Support continuousimprovement across processes, systems, workingpractices, andperformancelevels.
* Undertake any reasonabletasks asrequiredto support depotperformance.


Experience, Skills and Qualifications

* Recognisedapprenticeship(City &Guilds BTECminimum)withMechanical, Electrical,orElectronicbias andNVQ Level5 orequivalent.
* Extensiveengineeringexperienceinrolling stock maintenance or comparableenvironment.
* Strong knowledgeofmodern technical systems, fault-finding,androot cause investigationtechniques.
* Ability tointerpretelectricalandmechanical schematics confidently.
* Strong understandingof production-based safety andrisk management.
* Provenability todiagnosecomplexengineeringproblems.
* Ability tomaintainrequiredcompetencies for a safety-critical role.
* Commitmenttomaintainingspecialist knowledge andprofessionaldevelopment.
* Customer-focusedapproach withhighquality standards.
* Effective teamworkskillsandwillingness tosupportcolleagues.
* Awareness of costimpacts andoperational efficiencies.
* Passionfor continuousimprovementand operationalexcellence.
* Competent ITskills includingMS Office.
