Purpose of the role
At Colas, we are looking for a Highways Maintenance Operative (HMO) to join the team based at Doxey depot, ST18 9LG. As an HMO you will work as part of a team to carry out highway maintenance duties, winter maintenance, and emergency responses when required. Activities vary from Traffic Management to maintenance tasks such as Gully Emptying, Soft Estate, Street Furniture Repair, Winter Maintenance and more.
Colas is responsible for the eight-year Maintenance & Response contract for National Highways Area 9, covering around 2,300 miles of Strategic Road Network within Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire, plus parts of Gloucestershire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. The contract includes cyclical and reactive maintenance, incident and severe weather response, and minor works in a region featuring five strategic motorway interchange junctions and proximity to the HS2 network. Area 9 is a critical transport hub enabling UK-wide journeys.
Main Responsibilities
* Undertake various Highways Maintenance activities including Gully Emptying, Winter Maintenance, Sweeping & Cleaning, Soft Estate Clearance, Traffic Management, and other duties required to maintain the Highway Infrastructure.
* Promote and uphold health & safety within the workplace; adhere to defined safe systems of work and risk assessments.
* Participate in Incident Management & Winter Service and ensure the safe operation and daily checks of Colas plant and fleet in line with company policy.
* Manage administrative tasks (timesheet collation, capturing plant, labour & material use) in line with Colas processes.
* Maintain a professional image of the company and undertake any other duties as assigned by the line manager or Ganger to ensure satisfactory completion of works in accordance with Colas Health & Safety practices.
* Work across day and night shifts; participate in out-of-hours rotas for winter maintenance and emergency response, including standby, as required.
Ideal Candidate
* Full clean UK driving license; a class C HGV with CPC is preferable.
* Experience in Highways Maintenance and relevant qualifications (e.g., VRS, TM, Gully Emptying, Soft Estate) are desirable, though a strong attitude and willingness to learn is welcome.
* Can-do attitude, initiative, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; good communication skills and the ability to work under pressure are essential.
Package Description
* Salary between £25,396.80 and £30,368.00 (dependent on experience and licences) – monthly paid
