Job Overview

The successful candidate will have a senior medical role in our "Outstanding" CQC‑rated Critical Care service. They will contribute to the daily operation of a 24/7 consultant‑covered ICU, participating in the non‑resident on‑call rota. The role includes managing critically ill patients, engaging in multidisciplinary teamwork, and contributing to quality, safety and governance. They will also deliver and supervise educational activities.

In addition, the candidate will provide expert clinical toxicology services as part of one of only four specialist inpatient services in the UK, closely aligned with the Birmingham Unit of the National Poisons Information Service. The position involves day and on‑call cover for the West Midlands Poisons Unit, active participation in the clinical toxicology team and contribution to policy, management, governance and staff training.


Key Responsibilities

* Manage critically ill patients in a 30‑bed ICU following an "Outstanding" standard.
* Participate in the non‑resident critical care on‑call rota, with 75% critical care and 25% clinical toxicology focus.
* Provide daytime and on‑call cover for the West Midlands Poisons Unit, including telephone advice, face‑to‑face reviews and in‑reach assessments.
* Contribute to ICU governance, safety and quality initiatives, including morbidity and mortality reviews and multidisciplinary team meetings.
* Support simulation training, educational sessions and supervision of trainees, with up to 2.5 programmed educational activities per year.
* Assist with policy, management and governance in the clinical toxicology service, and contribute to audit and research projects.


Qualifications & Requirements

* Registered with the GMC Specialist Register or eligible within six months of interview date.
* Broad training and experience in both critical care and clinical toxicology.
* Enthusiastic, with a desire to bring new skills, knowledge and techniques to the department.
* Strong leadership and management potential; commitment to professional development.


Working Hours & Rotas

The role is 75% critical care and 25% clinical toxicology. The successful applicant will contribute to the non‑resident critical care on‑call rota and provide daytime and on‑call cover for the West Midlands Poisons Unit. The ICU operates a 24‑hour outreach service and a dedicated simulation teaching programme.
