Job overview

The post holder is responsible for continued development of evidence based department and nursing practice within the Surgical Services Care Group. They will use their expertise to provide support and act as a resource for senior and junior staff and members of the multidisciplinary team, demonstrating a commitment to the service philosophy through a framework of Clinical Governance.

The post holder will facilitate both formal and informal education, ensuring staff remain up-to-date with mandatory training and clinical competencies. They will also support the induction and development of new starters, students and volunteers, working collaboratively with senior nursing and multi-disciplinary management teams to promote a learning culture.

The post holder will support the Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse in ensuring the highest standard and quality of nursing care is delivered.

The post holder will work in partnership with other educators within the Trust to ensure collaborative working and approach. They must balance service needs with keeping their own clinical competencies and education up to date. The post holder must have experience within a surgical setting.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

1. Practice, education, training, development and staff support
2. Plan, deliver and evaluate clinical training and education sessions for multidisciplinary staff within surgical Services, ensuring it in in line with Surgical Services care group and the Trusts approach.
3. Ensure staff are compliant with mandatory training, including but not limited to: Basic Life Support (CPR), infection prevention, safeguarding, and PALMS.
4. Facilitate on-the-job learning and supervision, tailored to various roles and clinical specialisms.
5. Support student nurses, trainees and volunteers on placement within the department, acting as a mentor/assessor where appropriate.
6. Organise and deliver induction programmes for all new staff across sites.
7. Identify learning needs through feedback, observation, audit and appraisal processes.
8. To maintain one’s own clinical competency by working a clinical shift each week.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

9. RGN Level one
10. NMC registered
11. To have completed the national practice assessor training or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
12. Continuous professional development
13. First degree or evidence of working towards one (demonstrating graduate attributes)

Desirable criteria

14. A teaching Qualification or willingness to obtain a PGCE

Experience

Essential criteria

15. Extensive post registration experience in an acute surgical clinical environment
16. Extensive post registration experience supervising students practice in an acute clinical environment
17. Ability to lead, motivate and develop a professional team
18. Evidence of managing change

Desirable criteria

19. Management and leadership Course

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

20. IT literate knowledge of Electronic Patient record and any system used in providing care and services
21. Knowledge and application of Data base, Microsoft Programs and Powerpoint
22. Reducing Restrictive Intervention Trainer or willingness to undertake the train the trainer course
23. Ability to communicate effectively including active listening, writing, and verbally, with individuals on a one-to-one basis and with groups.
24. Evidence of relevant post basic training and continuous professional development
25. Highly developed leadership skills with excellent interpersonal skills – ability to form positive relationships at all levels.
26. Ability to manage complex workload under pressure and prioritise to meet deadlines
27. Persuasion and influencing skills – ability to present ideas and proposals effectively.
28. Clinical skills Including cannulation/ Venepuncture/ ECGs, Male catheterization, Central Venous Access Device
29. Some Experience in Facilitating Simulation Training
30. Evidence of high-level commitment to professional development, training and education

32. Key Trainer for Moving and Handling, BLS
