Post No. POSN005072 - Environmental Health Officer 37 hours per week (subject to pay award) We are delighted to be recruiting an Environmental Health Officer within our friendly Environmental Health Housing team in Newport City Council. The team is responsible for the regulation of the private rented sector, including Houses in Multiple Occupation, and resolving a range of domestic and commercial public health/environmental issues. The role includes responding to complaints regarding housing conditions, conducting programmed inspections of licensed residential accommodation, surveying properties in order to progress them through the house in multiple occupation licensing process, producing schedules of work, and assisting colleagues with enforcement work to improve standards in houses. Such enforcement work may also include statutory nuisance, drainage, unauthorised encampments, caravan sites and public health related functions. The role will also include work to support landlord registration and landlord/agent licensing ('Rent Smart Wales'). You may have just gained a degree in environmental health or may have gained this degree years ago making you experienced, have sound knowledge of housing legislation and have a passion for this area of work. The post holder will be required to gain a suitable HHSRS assessment and enforcement qualification within an agreed timescale after appointment, unless you have achieved this. You will also be provided with support to become a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner with the CIEH if required. This post will require you to demonstrate effective communication and negotiation skills; be able to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with people, be flexible, and be confident with regulatory enforcement. You will be capable of organising and prioritising work to meet deadlines, take enforcement and be able to operate in a self-sufficient manner.
