We are currently recruiting a Head of Business Development to join QinetiQ Target Systems (QTS) within our Business Development Team. QTS is a wholly owned subsidiary of QinetiQ Group PLC specialising in the design and manufacture of a range of state of the art Unmanned Aerial and Surface Target systems including the world leading Banshee target. QTS targets are used to enable realistic weapons test and evaluation and operator training in over 40 countries worldwide with QTS providing a complete managed service in over 15 of these countries.


What will I be doing?

Reporting to the QTS UK Managing Director (but with accountability to the QTS Canada Managing Director), you will develop and own the growth strategy of the targets business areas (QTS UK & QTS Canada), as a member of the senior leadership team of both sites deliver orders in line with budget and strategy over a 1‑3 year period. Protecting and securing new customers, shaping the market strategy for the 4‑5 year period.

* Own and deliver the market strategy and achieve challenging objectives, building a growing order intake pipeline and guiding investment and product roadmaps.
* Manage a small team of Business Development Managers and work closely with Customer Account Teams to pursue future orders.
* Build and retain strong relationships with customers and partners to close deals and secure profitable contracts.
* Provide winning leadership and foster strong intra‑ and inter‑company collaboration to develop solutions for customers.
* Identify and remove key risks that impede growth.
* Deliver in‑year orders and expand the order intake pipeline in line with budget.
* Think broadly and creatively about the industry, customers, geopolitics, and longer‑term opportunities.
* Maintain the C4C / CRM to ensure pipeline transparency and accurate forecast capture.
* Actively build and maintain trusting relationships within the industry, at QinetiQ, and with customers.
* Elevate QinetiQ’s profile locally and in broader markets.
* Champion authenticity, transparency and trust across all engagements.
* Understand and deliver on customer needs, proposing solutions that create competitive advantage.
* Provide thought leadership to generate demand for our capabilities.
* Optimize growth and profitability for QinetiQ over the medium and long term.
* Encourage a “Win strategy” mindset among the business.
* Develop and execute plans for new products and market entries.
* Build a compelling business case using multi‑source information to guide market entry and investment decisions.
* Communicate clearly, credibly, and positively with stakeholders, earning trust and securing buy‑in.
* Lead and drive employee engagement, coaching, facilitation and consultancy at all levels.
* Support a safety‑centric culture and promote continuous improvement.


Qualifications and Experience

You will have previous demonstrable experience in a sales/business development role at a management level in a global environment and be familiar with the global defence market, preferably with knowledge of test & evaluation, training solutions for live weapons firing, and aerial and surface remotely‑operated targets.

* Applicable business or engineering qualifications.
* At least 5 years of demonstrated success in defence business development with a minimum of 2 years of global experience.
* Leading advocate of winning business, liaising with senior‑level customers and structuring propositions and proposals.
* Comprehensive understanding of sales concepts and the technological disciplines and project delivery.
* Experience leading a team of professionals and driving performance.
* Strong coaching, facilitation, and consultancy skills with a proven track record of influencing at all levels.
* Knowledge of sector challenges, changes, and their impact on QinetiQ.
