Role Overview
As an Trainee IT Technician you will assist with activities to maintain the day‑to‑day operation and on‑going development of Computing and Information Services (CIS). Working in a number of teams within CIS during the course of the apprenticeship, you will maintain a high level of IT services throughout the University, assisting students, staff, and visitors in their use of Durham University IT systems. Responsibilities
* Operating systems: work with Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux, and macOS.
* Desktop software: support applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and specialist academic software.
* Specialist AV equipment: set up and maintain audiovisual (AV) equipment including video conferencing, lecture capture, esports and streaming systems.
* Multi‑function devices and desktop printers: support multifunction devices and desktop printers.
* Remote administration and software distribution tools: use tools for remote administration and software distribution.
* Network troubleshooting: diagnose and resolve network issues.
* Mobile and tablet support: assist with mobile phones and tablets.
* Accessibility configuration: configure hardware, software and devices to support accessibility needs.
* IT applications for disabilities: work with IT applications and technology to support staff and students with disabilities.
Specific Role Requirements
* Eligibility for apprenticeship position: you must not have obtained a higher‑education qualification at Level 4 or above (e.g., a first degree). (Exception: participation in the New Deal programme.)
* Apprenticeship terms and conditions: you will complete training on a weekly basis toward the Information Communications Technician – Level 3 qualification.
* IT service desk working hours: first year includes hours from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday‑Friday. Flexible working may be required, including occasional evenings and weekends, and cover at Queens Campus (Stockton).
* Annual leave restriction for IT service desk staff: during the start of the academic year (final week of September and first week of October) there is a two‑week annual leave restriction to support staff and students.
CIS is a friendly, but demanding department; much is expected and can be achieved by competent, self‑motivated individuals who demonstrate teamwork ability.
