The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.
Our Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with values exceeding £1bn.
Amey manages the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, both extendable up to 12 years. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.
These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages, involved in some of Scotland’s most exciting engineering projects.
The role
Our Lead Bridge Engineers play a key role within the Design team, working alongside Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.
Responsibilities include:
* Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with standards and client requirements.
* Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
* Overseeing junior staff and ensuring their work quality.
* Managing project budgets and controlling costs.
* Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
* Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
* Driving health and safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us:
* Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar.
* Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
* Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including CDM regulations.
* Experience acting as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
* Design and specification process knowledge, capable of advising and checking designs.
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
* Understanding of risk assessments and hazard management.
* Possibility to act as Principal Designer on suitable projects.
* People management skills, capable of managing a medium-sized team.
* Incorporated or Chartered status is desirable and may be essential on certain contracts.
