Senior advisor - energy sector - 32083

Warmley
Environment Agency
Will advisor
Posted: 12 October
Offer description

Overview

The Environment Agency is committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero drives transformation in the energy sectors as they are responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. They must fully decarbonise by 2050 while doubling electricity production. Energy security concerns add pressure to transition to sustainable power sources, maximising domestic energy.

Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions, and mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

We’re recruiting a fixed-term role, up to 2 years, for someone with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including scales of combustion plant, waste incineration and refineries. (Further information in additional information document.)

Responsibilities

You’ll need to:

* provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training
* develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes
* commission and manage external research projects where needed
* work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

The Team

The Energy & COMAH team is part of Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing:

* strategic direction and tools in support regulation of the energy sectors
* guidance and training to deliver new duties
* environmental best practice

Experience / Skills Required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your:

* ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
* relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role in question, gained either by working within and/or regulating relevant processes. This will include knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant
* ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia
* work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals

Contact and Additional Information

Applications will be “blind” assessed using your answers to the competency questions. Feedback is generally not available at the application stage.

For questions relating to this role, please contact Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl at this email address: combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk

This vacancy closes end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham, by the end of November. It would be anticipated that this role would require some travel. If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for 6 months and we may offer you an alternative post.
