Personal Assistant Opportunity – Maternity Cover – Supporting a Remarkable Young Man

Location: Swansea area

Job Type: Part-time, Fixed-Term (Maternity Cover)

Hours: Monday, Thursday & Friday – 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (24 hours/week)

Salary: From £13.50 per hour

Are you compassionate, energetic, and ready to make a meaningful impact? We're looking for a dedicated Personal Assistant to join our close-knit team on a maternity cover contract, supporting a young gentleman with profound learning difficulties to live a life full of joy, growth, and independence.

We're a family-led team working hands-on to develop our son's daily living skills, confidence, and social engagement. Despite significant challenges—including epilepsy, autistic traits, and mild deafness—he continues to surprise us with his resilience, humour, and capacity to learn. He's non-verbal but expressive, cheeky, and full of personality. With the right support, he thrives.

About the Role

You'll be part of a trained team providing 2:1 support, helping him engage in fun, meaningful activities at home and in the community. This includes:

* Supporting daily living skills using positive behavioural strategies
* Applying physiotherapy and oral motor therapy targets
* Encouraging independence through patience, creativity, and gentle persistence
* Reading subtle cues and using communication aids to understand his needs
* Assisting with mobility, including occasional wheelchair use
* Participating in activities like Ski-ability and hopefully Surfability (yes, that means getting in the sea)

This is a part-time role working Monday, Thursday, and Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Statutory holidays (5.6 weeks pro-rata) are included, with guaranteed time off at Christmas. Occasional extra days may be required for team training sessions, scheduled well in advance.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking someone who is:

* Patient, observant, and emotionally intelligent
* Creative, dynamic, and able to think on their feet
* Willing to learn and adapt as our son's needs evolve
* In good general health and physical condition, with the stamina to support an active daily routine
* Comfortable with physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and pushing a wheelchair
* A confident driver with a full UK or EU driving licence and access to a reliable car
* Educated to A-level standard or with relevant experience
* Fluent in English (spoken and written) with basic maths skills
* Empathetic and enthusiastic about working with individuals with special needs

Experience in behavioural support is welcome but not essential—full training is provided, including sessions with our Behavioural Consultant (BCBA Risca Solomon of Skybound Autism Therapies).

Why Join Us?

* Be part of a warm, dedicated team that's been growing with our son since he was 3
* Receive ongoing training and support tailored to his evolving needs
* Work in a positive, uplifting environment where every day brings new learning
* Help create a life filled with laughter, mischief, and meaningful experiences

A 6-month probation period applies, with a pay review upon successful completion. Salary is paid every 4 weeks and reviewed annually based on performance and progression.

Additional Info

* Full DBS check required before starting
* COVID safety protocols in place (handwashing, sanitising)
* Must hold a full UK or EU driving licence and be comfortable driving an automatic car (training provided if needed)
* Must have access to a reliable car, as we are not close to a bus route

If this sounds like the kind of role that speaks to your heart and skills, we'd love to hear from you. Please reply with a brief introduction and your up-to-date CV.
