Morebattle Community Shop – Shop Manager
Morebattle Community Shop is a thriving village shop, offering a wide range of food and household staples sourced from local suppliers and producers wherever possible. The shop serves the Morebattle and Kalewater communities. Aside from the main shop premises, we also have an additional space in the village (the old butcher’s shop), just a few doors down, which provides office workspace and additional storage.
This role offers great potential to take the shop forward in your own way, working alongside an established team of volunteers and the part‑time staff member, and with the support and guidance of the Management Committee.
The shop is very much a social enterprise where your commitment and aspirations for your community role will match the targets for the commercial performance of the shop. You will be taking responsibility for the day‑to‑day running of the business, stock control and financial management as well as working alongside the team in the shop.
The Morebattle Community Shop Management Board (the Board), volunteers for which are elected by the shareholders, sets the strategic direction, overall policy, management and direction for the shop. You will report to, and be supported by, the Board.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Manage the day‑to‑day operations of the shop
* Ensure the shop is welcoming and friendly to customers, staff and volunteers
* Maintain administrative and financial administration systems and procedures including invoice management
* Be responsible for stock ordering, stock levels and stock control
* Monitor product shelf life for stock control and compliance
* Provide excellent customer service
* Day‑to‑day marketing, product promotion and social media
* To develop and (with the Board’s approval) implement ideas to improve footfall and sales and to bring more people into the shop
* Roll out seasonal and/or other marketing campaigns to promote products
* Play a hands‑on role behind the counter serving customers
* Have the flexibility to work a range of shifts to support the opening times of the shop
* Be responsible for staff and volunteer rotas
* Develop and maintain good relationships with the Management Committee, keeping them abreast of operational and financial issues
* Ensure a high standard of cleanliness and presentation within the shop, and maintain excellent Food Safety standards.
What we are looking for:
You don’t need to have done exactly this type of role before.
What we are looking for is a good all‑rounder with retail, or customer‑services experience, confident using computer and digital systems, working with teams, who loves the customer‑facing experience and is keen to learn and to contribute to a thriving community business.
About you:
* Motivated, reliable and community‑minded
* Confident with computer and digital systems and the ability to learn new software such as a till/EPOS system
* Experience in retail, food service, hospitality, business or another customer‑facing role
* Enjoy leading, upskilling and supporting a small team of staff and volunteers and happy to be working closely with the community‑led Management Board
* Well organised and financially literate
* Friendly, approachable, and committed to excellent customer service
* Enthusiasm for working in a community environment and relating to the wider community
* Excellent communication skills
* Awareness of alcohol licensing requirements and/or willingness to undertake any necessary training.
The Shop Manager role is a full‑time permanent post, 37.5 hours/week.
Starting salary £31,500. We are happy to consider applications for job‑shares.
The opening hours of the shop are Mon-Fri 8am-4pm, Saturday 8.00am-3pm, Sunday 8am-1pm.
