Overview
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Part Time Groundsperson (2-3 days/week) to maintain and assist in the future development of an established large country garden to a high horticultural standard near Bruton, Somerset. This position is offered to self-employed skilled gardeners in the locality, on the basis of 2 or 3 days per week to focus on the finer horticultural aspects of the garden.
Estate and Role Details
The estate as a whole extends across 180-acres of farmland and paddocks, with approximately 3-acres of formal gardens surrounding the main house. These gardens include a cut-flower area, productive vegetable garden, and a traditional croquet lawn. The grounds are enhanced by ornamental planting around the main house and pool, neatly maintained hedges, and a network of winding pathways through the gardens.
The role will involve general maintenance of the estate and its grounds, including but not limited to mowing, hedge trimming, turf management, weeding, crop rotation, seasonal mulch and compost management, and upkeep of outbuildings and pathways. The successful candidate will have practical experience in farmland, estate, or garden maintenance, and can operate and maintain a range of machinery safely and efficiently across the estate.
Responsibilities
* Operate and maintain estate machinery, including tractors, ride-on mowers, and other power equipment, safely and efficiently.
* Perform mowing, hedge trimming, turf management, weeding, crop rotation, seasonal mulch and compost management, and upkeep of outbuildings and pathways.
* Assist with maintenance of formal gardens and grounds to a high horticultural standard.
Qualifications and Experience
* Experience operating and maintaining estate machinery; PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates and a chainsaw qualification are desirable.
* Extensive experience working on private estates, farms, or large grounds; knowledge of basic horticultural practices is beneficial but the role emphasizes practical grounds and machinery maintenance rather than creative gardening or plant design.
* Self-motivated, organised, with a strong work ethic and ability to manage estate grounds efficiently. Flexibility to extend duties across the wider estate when needed.
Requirements and Conditions
* This is a physically demanding role; the candidate should be fit, reliable, and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Working hours are 7:00am – 4:00pm with a 1-hour unpaid break. Days are flexible and open to discussion with the candidate.
* Applicants should live within commuting distance and have a full driving licence with their own transport.
* Role is based within a private estate setting; discretion and loyalty are required to respect the privacy of the owners. The successful candidate will be subject to extensive reference checks and a DBS check.
