Job summary
This Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist position will be based at the Moorfields satellite unit within Croydon University Hospital (CUH), though there may be the opportunity to work at other Moorfields sites in the future. The post has 8 direct patient care sessions and will form part of the well-established multidisciplinary team.
The 8 clinical sessions will comprise of 2.5 cataract clinics (face to face & virtual), 2 general clinic, 1.5 cataract surgery list and 2 rapid access clinics. This is an exciting and innovative schedule reflecting new ways of working for the future of ophthalmology. It is expected the successful candidate will lead and work with the multidisciplinary team to develop these services further.
Main duties of the job
The General and urgent care (Rapid Access Clinic) services at Moorfields Croydon is well established and aim at providing comprehensive ophthalmology diagnostic and treatment for patient with multifactorial eye health issues and eye emergencies. The complex patient demographics and the challenging pathology at patient presentation requires consultant and senior ophthalmic specialist input for a significant amountof the clinical workload. The same applies to the cataract service, which treats surgical cases of high complexity, deriving from this challenging patient population.
The 3 sub-speciality services receive referrals from multiple sources, including A&E, GP, community optometrist and internal referrals from other services within MEH, as well as external providersacross the South-East of England and beyond.
The General and Rapid Access services pride ourselves on providing comprehensive ophthalmological services to patients who attend with a multiple array of mixed ophthalmological complaints, ranging from simple dry eye to complex trauma. The Rapid Access clinic has an innovative virtual-triage approach to managing emergency referrals and has a close collaborative relationship with our primary referrers in the community.

Governance
To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Service Director.
Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
To work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Service Director.
Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.
To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Service Director.
To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Strategy and Business Planning
To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.
To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Service Director.
Research, Teaching & Audit
