Job overview

Ward B is a busy, fast paced, elective orthopaedic ward. We are looking to recruit a full time Health Care Support Worker.

This role is 37.5 hours per week and involves working a shift pattern across 7 days Monday - Sunday, including days and nights.

Under current Home Office rules, this role is not eligible for employer sponsorship as it does not meet the salary threshold. Applicants must have their own ongoing right to work in the UK to be appointed.


Main duties of the job

Contribute to the development of the care environment with a positive, professional attitude.The Healthcare Assistant will work as part of the ward team with supervision of registered practitioners to provide effective, safe patient focused care at all times.

Contribute to the maintenance of daily provision of service and care to meet the individual needs of patients and department.

To support the smooth running of the ward and ensure patients, relatives and carers are dealt with in a friendly and efficient manner.

You will ensure that policies and guidelines are adhered to.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a health care assistant you play a vital role in delivering high standards of care to our patients on Ward B.

Ward B is a busy elective orthopaedic ward, you will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure all patients are cared for and treated with dignity and respect. Your duties will be varied, and include, assisting patient with personal hygiene, assisting patients during meal times, talking and listening to patients and working in partnership with patients, carers and the wider team.

This is a very demanding and challenging role, you will need to be compassionate and caring and have a passion for this type of work. You will need to demonstrate that you are highly motivated, enthusiastic, well organised and are able to work both independently and as part of a team. Effective communication skills are essential

Duties of a Healthcare Support Worker
We know that no two days are the same and it’s hard to fit everything on one page, however, the following are an example of the duties our Healthcare Support Workers do every day in their roles:
1. Assist patients with the provision of washing, dressing, personal care, beverages and/or meals.
2. Assist qualified nursing and medical staff where requested.
3. Communicate with all members of the team to maintain a good service provision.
4. Ensure that all patients are able to meet their hygiene needs, providing a level of assistance appropriate to the individual.
5. Prepare and support the patient appropriately during any activity that is to be undertaken.
6. Alert the registered nurse where you notice any changes in the patient’s health and well-being or any possible risks.
7. Ensure effective use of material resources/supplies within the ward/unit in consultation with senior staff.
8. Assist with the general cleaning and re-stocking of resources where appropriate as well as cleaning and preparing patients beds.
9. Contribute to own personal development and take an active part in learning opportunities.

10. Assists with the transportation of patients, equipment and supplies

11. Assists in maintaining stock levels


Person specification


Qualifications

* Evidence of basic level qualification in English and Maths or able to demonstrate equivalent experience


Experience

* Previous experience of working within a care environment.


Skills

* Good communication and interpersonal skills
* Able to demonstrate a positive attitude and caring demeanour
* Ability to challenge unacceptable behaviour


Knowledge

* An interest in healthcare services


Additional

* Flexible and able to work on any ward and site within the Trust
* Ability to work internal rotational shifts
* Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
