About Team Love
We are one of the South-West’s leading event production companies, specialising in music festivals and events. We co‑programme and produce a number of innovative, large‑scale events (Love Saves The Day, Love International, Simple Things, Waterworks, FORWARDS and the Silver Hayes area of Glastonbury). We also run our own venue, an established cornerstone of Bristol nightlife, The Love Inn.
Social responsibility and sustainability are central to our work – we aim to produce events which contribute to wider change in the local community and beyond, and run a number of additional dedicated projects and initiatives centred around social and environmental impact and change.
About Twisted Theatre
Twisted Theatre is a diverse collective of artists who come together to create immersive experiences at festivals and events across the UK. Their work has a political edge which seeks to challenge perspectives and parody real life events. They love creating design‑led work for unsuspecting audiences. Their aim is to be unpredictable and exciting in nature. They have created interactive venues, walkabouts, performances, set designs, installations, and more at festivals including Love Saves the Day, Forwards, Boomtown, Eldorado & Glastonbury. They are a large collective with a wide range of skills and experiences.
About the Role
We are looking for three people who want to gain training and experience in the design and creation of immersive festival venues.
You will be part of the Twisted Theatre design team, supporting the build and development of our area.
This opportunity is for people hoping to pursue a career in Set Design to gain experience supporting the design, planning and build of installations within the Twisted Theatre secret venues at Love Saves the Day and Forwards Festival.
Previous years have included a parody no.10 Downing Street Christmas party, a dystopian supermarket, a money laundering laundrette and a secret club tropicana ball pit venue with live acts and DJs.
The placement will include workshops & training from the Twisted Theatre and Team Love design & fabrication teams to develop the skills needed.
Key Responsibilities
The placement will be split into three main phases: training, pre‑build/prep and onsite build.
The training days will be mainly located at the Team Love Workshop in Bristol BS2 but will include some trips and site visits to other Bristol locations. We can assist with access to free public transport.
During the pre‑build/prep days you will be working at the Team Love Workshop in Bristol BS2 and will be expected to do some independent tasks outside of the sessions.
The build days will be onsite at Bristol festival locations (Ashton Court and The Downs).
You will always be working as part of the Twisted Theatre team, and will be supported throughout the placement by three lead mentors: Ruby Pugh, Twisted Theatre Director; Alice Sales, Twisted Theatre Lead Designer; and Rebecca Fitzgerald, Team Love Creative Director.
All three placements will work together as a team to develop your own collaborative ideas from concept to completion, supported by Twisted Theatre/Team Love throughout. All tasks and deliverables will be clearly outlined in each session with the chance to discuss and ask questions at any point of the placement.
Training will include: Basic CAD skills for exploring and communicating spatial concepts, budget planning, risk assessments, design concept idea generation and presentation.
Pre‑build/planning days will include budgeting, planning, designing, shopping, painting, sewing, creating and prepping the interiors ready for the install days.
On‑site days will include planning & time management, painting, building, installing and decorating the interiors of the venues.
During the placement, you will be given a design task as a team to develop an immersive concept of your own and use a limited allocated budget to create your own installation within the larger onsite Twisted Theatre venue.
