We have an exciting opportunity for a band 6 Cancer Nurse Specialist in the Acute Oncology Service ( AOS).

We are looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate individual who has excellent communication skills.

The AOS service provides high quality, nursing care and support to patients who have a cancer diagnosis who are acute unwell from cancer or from various anti-cancer therapies.

AOS Nurses are the cancer nurse specialist (CNS) for patients with cancer of unknown primary (CUP)and are a vital member of the CUP MDT.

We are looking for a dynamic candidate who is able to provide nursing care to patient\'s when having an oncology emergency. Provided advice and guidance to nursing and medical teams on oncology side effects/ emergencies. Excellent interpersonal skills who are able to liaise with various clinicians/teams, internal and external across the northern region.

You will work closely with the Chemotherapy Day Unit & Emergency Care Centre/Same Day Emergency Care Department.

This is a 5 day service, the successful candidate will be working Monday- Friday, and will be expected to work alternative bank Holiday\'s.


Main duties of the job

Assessing patients with acute oncology needs, instigating investigations, and providing specialist care.

To provided nursing care/ support, to patients who are having an oncology emergency secondary to cancer. Provide specialist nursing care for patients who are having treatment related complications.

Deliver education to patients and their families regarding symptoms, side effects, or complications of cancer and its treatments.

Work alongside the band 7 to deliver education to clinician\'s within the trust regarding oncology emergencies and treatment side effects.

Cancer Nurse specialist for cancer of unknown primary (CUP), ensuring CUP patients and families are supported throughout their whole cancer journey.

Work autonomously and as part of the CUP multi-disciplinary team to help delivery the CUP pathway.

Triage Patients who call the chemotherapy emergency helpline, provide advice and guidance to patient/ families. Streamline oncology admissions/ reviews in the most appropriate setting.

Undertake and lead on audits within the service.

Contribute to the planning and development of the acute oncology service to improve patient care and outcomes.

Job responsibilities

To provide the highest standard of holistic care for patients through the utilisation of enhanced clinical skills and advice in the assessment and management of patients in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to improve and maintain the quality and safety of patient care

To contribute to the delivery and development of the acute oncology/cancer of unknown primary (CUP) nursing service through the use of effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for clinical practice

To be accountable for the planning and delivery of all aspects of patient care in relation to the acute oncology/CUP nursing serviceand as set out in the NMC Code

To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework to ensure the highest quality of care is provided in safest manner

To work as a member of a clinical team in the provision of acute oncology/CUP nursing care and knowledge

To provide specialist acute oncology/CUP nursing advice and support to clinical staff within GHNT on the management and care of patients within own area of specialist nursing practice to facilitate the effective delivery of care to patients

To communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, patients, carers and the public

To act as a resource and role model for the profession at all times

To provide education and training to clinical staff and internal /external agencies


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Current RN NMC registration


Experience

* High level of interpersonal and communication skills
* Organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload
* Ability to cope with and diffuse difficult and stressful situations
