Overview
Are you an Adult Nurse who would like to become a midwife? This is a salary-supported Student Midwife opportunity in the Maternity department at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. All course fees will be paid. Funding is not guaranteed in coming years, so this is an opportunity to develop your career pathway.
The successful candidate will undertake the education and training required with London South Bank University to achieve NMC registration as a Registered Midwife. This training is across a 2-year fixed-term period. The 2-year Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery aims to produce competent, caring, research and evidence-based midwives who can deliver woman-centred care for mothers and families.
Working as a student midwife involves being recognised as a responsible and accountable individual who works in partnership with women to provide support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period under the direction/supervision of a registered midwife. This includes preventative measures, promoting an optimal birth experience, detecting complications, enabling access to medical care and carrying out emergency measures where needed.
Responsibilities
* Complete the necessary further education at BSc/PG Dip/Dip HE level to provide and maintain high‑standard skilled care for women, babies and families in various settings in line with the accredited faculty syllabus.
* Adhere to the Trust values and contribute to excellent patient care within Homerton.
* Attend and complete the education programme to practise safely and effectively after registration, taking full responsibility and accountability for practice as a midwife.
* Work in collaboration with Clinical Placement Facilitators, Practice Lecturers, Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors to support learning and professional development.
Qualifications and Essential Criteria
* Education / Qualifications
o A registered Adult nurse (NMC) with current registration
o Understand statutory requirements for midwives
o A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2:2 and evidence of study at Level 6
* Skills / Abilities
o Good written and oral communication skills
o Team working and collaboration
o Ability to cope with stress and workload pressures
o Clear English language competence
* Experience
o At least 12 months post-qualification clinical experience
o Excellent clinical skills and commitment to family-centred care
o Willingness to extend clinical skills and engage with evidence-based practice
* Knowledge
o Knowledge of current midwifery issues and local policy context
o Evidence of professional development and relevant further study
o Understanding of clinical governance and confidentiality
* Other Requirements
o Ability to work days / nights / flexible shifts
o Demonstration of Trust Values and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
