Marston Holdings are continually expanding, and part of our growth is our Technology side of the business where we have attained Videalert and Vortex. Together we are the UK’s leading supplier of intelligent traffic enforcement and management solutions and leading provider of smart city solutions that deliver the highest productivity at the lowest operational cost. We provide environmental sensors, networks, and data solutions to support decarbonisation efforts globally. We drive real environmental change by leveraging the power of real-time data with cleantech technologies. What you will be doing: As the R&D Engineer you will work on designing and developing state-of-the-art products and technologies. Your contribution will primarily be in rapid development of analogue and digital electronics, communication protocols, writing device firmware, setting up and configuring Single-Board-Computer (SBC) units for edge-computing and wireless communication methods. New PCB design, testing, debugging, and prototyping for electronics hardware. Produce technical design and test reports. Support maintenance and continuous improvement of the existing Vortex and Videalert product range. Collaborate with other R&D departments including Software, Product Design, QA, Procurement and Production. Contribute to the design and development of analogue and digital electronics, including schematic capture and PCB layout using design software such as Altium, KiCad, or Eagle. Develop and debug firmware for microcontroller-based systems, including peripherals such as SPI, I2C, UART, ADCs, and timers. Support integration of edge computing platforms (e.g., Single-Board Computers, embedded Linux systems) into larger IoT architectures. Participate in system-level design discussions with hardware, firmware, and software engineers to ensure interoperability and compliance with performance and quality standards. Assist with hardware testing, validation, and documentation, ensuring that designs meet safety, EMC, and environmental requirements. Support field testing and deployments, working with technicians to configure and troubleshoot hardware in operational environments. Supporting the production and configuration teams to ensure consistent builds and configurations. Assisting with uptime monitoring, field testing, and on-site deployments — ensuring hardware reliability and long-term performance. What are we looking for: Technically capable, self-driven individual with a MSc/BSc (or equivalent) in Electronics, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, with demonstrable experience in embedded and edge computing product design. Over 2 years of industrial/project experience in working with Embedded Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers, and commercial product development. A clear understanding of computer communication networks, IP v4/v6, CoAP, UDP, TCP and relevant network diagnostics. Familiarity with Computer Networks, Communication Protocols, Network Configuration with Windows and Linux platforms and Low-power RF Networks. A comprehensive understanding of microcontroller peripherals is mandatory including communication standards like SPI, UART, I2C, etc., deft knowledge of utilising SFRs, Timers, Counters, Interrupts, ADCs, etc. What’s in it for you?
