Specialty Consultant Psychiatrist

This post is a Specialty Doctor level psychiatrist role within the Manchester Community Adult Learning Disability (CALD) Service, delivering expert psychiatric care to adults with learning disabilities and complex needs in community settings. The role combines advanced clinical practice, legal responsibilities, and clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary framework.


Main duties of the job

* Conduct specialist comprehensive psychiatric assessment for individuals with intellectual disabilities, often involving complex co‑morbidities like Autism, ADHD, and Epilepsy.
* Develop best‑practice treatment formulations, overseeing holistic management plans that include pharmacological and psychosocial interventions.
* Prescribe and monitor medication, reviewing psychotropic prescriptions to ensure safety and effectiveness, following STOMP guidelines.
* Lead and support the multidisciplinary team in crisis and risk management, managing high‑risk behaviours and complex disorders to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
* Conduct domiciliary and clinical visits, assessing patients in various community settings including home, residential care, and day services.


Person Specification

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification; Full GMC registration with licence to practise on the Specialist Register for Psychiatry of Learning Disability or eligibility for Approved Clinician/Responsible Clinician status or willingness to obtain Section 12(2) Mental Health Act approval; evidence of ongoing CPD in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists standards.
* Specialist knowledge in positive behavioural support, offending, mental health in autism, dementia, or other relevant areas; understanding of psychiatric presentations in adults with learning disabilities; knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983; knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act principles; knowledge of national guidelines such as NICE and STOMP; understanding of clinical governance and audit processes.
* Experience assessing and treating adults with intellectual disabilities and co‑morbidities; experience in risk management and crisis response; experience prescribing and reviewing psychotropic medication (STOMP aligned); experience with community‑based psychiatric assessments; experience completing Mental Capacity Assessments; experience producing reports for tribunals, safeguarding or courts; experience working effectively in MDTs.
* Deliver complex psychiatric assessment and interventions with people presenting a range of psychiatric and behavioural difficulties; highly developed communication skills; ability to work with groups, families or indirectly through others; strong analytical and judgmental skills; ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing and severely challenging behaviour; maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing situations; sustain mental and emotional effort whilst containing the distress of others; use supervision reflectively and appropriately to manage personal stressors arising from work duties; excellent communication skills including with non‑verbal patients; undertake comprehensive assessments and formulate holistic plans; provide clinical leadership within MDTs; strong decision‑making skills in complex cases; collaborate with primary care, Adult Social care and CAMHS; strong organisational and prioritisation skills; high‑quality clinical documentation and report writing skills.
* Knowledge of research methodologies.
* Specialist experience in positive behavioural support, offending, mental health autism, dementia, or other relevant area; working with other client groups; operational management of staff.
* Record of publishing in peer‑reviewed, academic or professional journals and/or books.
* Good IT skills; Microsoft packages (email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and clinical systems.
