Band 5 Anaesthetic Nurse /Operating Department Practitioner
The post holder will assist in the routine daily planning and organisation of the theatres/allocated anaesthetic area, participate in department administration, assess care needs, develop and evaluate programmes of care.
The post holder must be a qualified nurse with a relevant anaesthetic nurse or ODP qualification, registered with NMC/HCPC with an up to date PIN and registration number.
Professionalism and continuous improvement are expected, including adherence to Trust policies and regulatory bodies.
The role will involve rotating across specialties, covering the crash/obstetric bleep, and working out of hours, including 24/7 service.
Main duties of the job
* Monitor and maintain the quality of nursing activities and achieve prescribed standards of care.
* Provide individualised nursing/ODP care according to guidance provided by professional development and senior staff.
* Provide counselling for patients, relatives and staff as appropriate.
* Liaise with colleagues and community staff to ensure continuity of clinical practice.
* Act as an anaesthetic member of the theatre team and share accountability for high standards of care.
* Assist surgeons/anaesthetists/nurses/ODP colleagues as required.
* Ensure correct positioning of patients and smooth running of theatre lists.
* Coordinate prompt collection and dispatch of specimens.
* Check, witness and administer controlled drugs.
* Coordinate sending and returning patients to/from the operating department.
* Participate in pre/peri/post anaesthetic and operative care of patients.
* Advise the Team Leader/Sister/Charge Nurse of proposed changes in operating lists and escalating concerns.
* Maintain stock levels and ensure safe utilisation of equipment.
* Provide cell salvage collection, processing and reinfusion processes in accordance with Trust policy.
* Wear uniform at all times in accordance with the uniform policy.
* Interact with patients, visitors, nursing team and managers positively and cooperatively.
* Carry out other reasonably related duties as assigned.
* Be prepared to work across theatre specialities including anaesthetics, recovery and day surgery.
* Report sick and annual leave in line with departmental guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience
* Registered RGN/ODP with relevant anaesthetic nurse qualification.
* Demonstrated experience in anaesthetic nursing or ODP practice.
* Knowledge of infection control, hygiene, patient safety and clinical guidelines.
* Ability to work across multiple specialties and out of hours.
* Strong communication, teamwork and organisational skills.
