Senior Technician (Environmental Biology)

Role Overview
The full‑time Senior Technician (Environmental Biology) will support the University’s Environmental Sciences biology facilities. The post holder will oversee biology research laboratories, train and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, and ensure that all laboratory work complies with health and safety standards. The role involves hands‑on equipment maintenance, grant‑funded research support, and occasional support for practical classes, chemistry laboratories, and fieldwork.
Responsibilities
* Oversee and manage biology research laboratories.
* Train and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the laboratories.
* Ensure health and safety compliance and safe working practices for all laboratory personnel.
* Maintain, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to a high standard.
* Support grant‑funded research projects and contract work, paying close attention to detail.
* Provide assistance to other work areas such as practical classes, chemistry laboratories, and environmental fieldwork.
Qualifications
* Good prior laboratory work experience.
* Skilled in cell‑culture, in‑vitro assays, ELISAs, (eco)toxicology testing, molecular biology, western blotting, and histology.
* Experience of environmental biology fieldwork is desirable.
* GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or equivalent (essential).
* Strong communicator with high customer‑service skills and the ability to engage with a range of stakeholders.
* Willingness to work outside normal hours on limited occasions.

Location: Brunel University of London, Uxbridge Campus
Salary: Grade G6, £34,145 – £38,638 per annum (London weighting), potential progression to £40,757.
Hours: Full‑time
Contract Type: Fixed term (14 months, possibility to extend)
