Role Overview
As Manager of Student Services, you will lead a dynamic team responsible for the full spectrum of student welfare and engagement. You will design and deliver best‑practice support programmes, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, and continuously develop new initiatives to enhance the student experience.
Key Responsibilities
1. Student Welfare & Support
Oversee day‑to‑day student support services, including one‑to‑one guidance and group workshops.
Conduct home visits and liaise with families when necessary to promote attendance and well‑being.
Coordinate with health professionals, social services, and emergency services during critical incidents.
2. Case Management & Intervention
Manage caseloads of students requiring additional support, tracking progress and outcomes.
Design and implement individual action plans for attendance, behaviour, or safeguarding concerns.
Escalate serious issues in line with safeguarding policy, including contacting the emergency services if attendance issues become critical.
3. Programme Development
Develop and review support programmes (e.g., study skills, mental health first aid, career coaching).
Monitor service quality and produce regular reports on key performance indicators (attendance rates, referral outcomes, student satisfaction).
4. Stakeholder Engagement
Build strong relationships with academic staff, external agencies (counsellors, local authorities, charities), and parents/guardians.
Represent the Institute at external forums and meetings to advocate for student welfare and best practice.
5. Leadership & Innovation
Line‑manage the Student Services team: recruit, train, appraise, and support staff.
Champion a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging the team to propose and pilot new initiatives.
Ensure all support activities comply with regulatory requirements and Institute policies.
Additional Duties
Occasional out‑of‑hours contact for urgent student welfare matters.
Delivery of staff CPD (Continuing Professional Development) sessions on pastoral care topics.
Contribution to cross‑Institute projects (e.g., retention taskforce, mental health strategy).
Person Specification
Essential Criteria Desirable Criteria |
Proven experience (minimum ONE year) in a student support, welfare, or pastoral role within education or a related sector. Qualification in counselling, social work, psychology, or a comparable discipline
Demonstrable success managing caseloads and delivering positive attendance/engagement outcomes. Experience in home‑visiting or safeguarding investigations
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to liaise across multiple stakeholders. Leadership training or experience mentoring junior staff
Ability to work under pressure, handle emergencies calmly, and make sound decisions. Track record of developing and implementing support programmes
Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of student suppor.t Familiarity with relevant legislation (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education)
