The Medical Director shall be a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of Florida. The Medical Director has responsibility for medical direction of the hospice patient’s care and treatment and consults and cooperates with the patient’s attending physician. The Medical Director also educates community physicians and others engaged in healthcare services regarding the hospice program and its potential benefits to patients.


Quality of Clinical Care Duties:

1. Assures appropriate evaluation and certification of terminal prognosis of patients for Hospice admission, the quality of initial plans of care, the quality of comprehensive plans of care, and the accuracy of documents;
2. Reviews revocations, recertifications of terminal prognosis; and the quality of pain and symptom management proposing the most current options for interventions;
3. Documents care provided in the patient’s clinical record providing evidence of progress of the end-stage-disease process;
4. Demonstrates knowledge in communications and counseling patient and families;
5. Recertifies patients, as appropriate, for continuation of Medicare Hospice Benefits at appropriate levels of care;
6. Provides medical expertise on pain and symptom management to admission and patient care staff, and on the evaluation of terminal prognosis to admission and patient care staff;
7. Actively participates in formal quality improvement functions and committees; Interdisciplinary Group and the Ethics Committee, as assigned;
8. Interacts with attending physicians as necessary regarding pain and symptom management issues and issues involving patient prognosis;
9. Regularly participates in and provides leadership for the Interdisciplinary Team meetings as well as conducts visits to home, long-term care or inpatient patients as assigned;
10. Evaluates and treats patients in all levels of care as needed;
11. Provides coverage in Community Hospice’s inpatient units as assigned by the Chief Medical Director;
12. Trains residents, fellows, and advanced registered nurse practitioners;
13. Performs any other clinical care duties within the scope of your position requested by the Chief Medical Director.


Community Relations duties:

1. Educates community physicians on the principles of hospice care and palliative medicine;
2. Attends and gives lectures at medical staff and other medical community conferences, pertaining to hospice and palliative care;
3. Assists in introducing the hospice program to long-term care providers, managed care providers, hospitals, and others; and conducts educational seminars, in-services, and presentations to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare audiences whose support for and understanding of the hospice program is integral to ensuring hospice services are accessible to patients and families.
4. Performs any other community relations duties within the scope of your position requested by the Chief Medical Director.


Educational Duties:

1. Assists in the development of and actively participates in clinical teaching for all hospice patient care and admissions personnel;
2. Actively participates in medical and nursing education programs on hospice and palliative medicine provided by the hospice to medical and nursing colleges in the community;
3. Be a member and participate in professional organizations related to hospice and palliative medicine;
4. Attends IDT/IDG conferences;
5. Maintains current knowledge of the latest research and trends in hospice care and pain/symptom management;
6. Participates in performance improvement programs as indicated;
7. Performs any other educational duties within the scope of your position requested by the Sr. Medical Director.


Required Licenses/Certifications:

1. Current Florida Medical License;
2. Current State of Florida driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to Community Hospice insurance carrier, and reliable transportation.


Qualifications:


Education/Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would qualify. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

* Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree from an accredited medical school with a current Florida license;
* Must be eligible for, or have membership in good standing on the medical staff of at least one of the accredited hospitals in the Community Hospice service area;
* Hospice and Palliative Medicine Certification by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative (Preferred);
* Experience with oncology, home health, or hospice care delivery is desirable.
