Post and Specialty
This is a well-established post but has been vacant due to the previous consultant leaving the organisation. The post is funded as eight Programmed Activities (10 PAs) post with 7.5 Direct Clinical Contact activities (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). The post is currently filled by a locum doctor due. It is a 1 Year Fixed Term post, and the employer considers requests from senior doctors with sufficient experience in CAMHS who wish to enrol in an Acting Up Consultant position. Flexible working, job share or fixed term is open if preferred.

Rationale for Post
A lot of transformation has taken place and continues within Essex's Community CAMHS Services. This is a replacement, substantive, full-time post – 10 Programmed Activities with 7.5 Direct Clinical Contact activities and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities. Recruitment is sought immediately.
On‑call Responsibilities
Postholder will be part of the Senior Psychiatrist out of hours on‑call rota. The community CAMHS Consultants rotate 1:7 with a 2% basic salary, Category B on‑call supplement. Shifts run 17:00‑09:00 Monday‑Friday, all day on weekends and bank holidays. The on‑call service provides telephone advice to crisis teams – the first point of call for children in crisis out of hours in Southend, Essex and Thurrock. It does not include support to psychiatric inpatient units or Section 136 suites.
Successful candidates will work as part of multidisciplinary teams delivering care to children and young people with mental health needs across South East Essex, with the service spread across two main bases.
Main Responsibilities
* Organise and prioritise own and others’ workload in day‑to‑day allocation of work.
* Deputise during the team manager’s absence and delegate to other medical staff.
* Maintain organisational knowledge of Trust protocols and procedures and adhere to them.
* Provide accurate records required by the Trust for audit purposes.
* Ensure effective risk management at team level through accident/incident reporting, risk assessment and control, and adding residual risks to the Trust’s risk register.
Clinical Skills
* Act as an autonomous, registered practitioner accountable for unsupervised actions governed by professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines.
* Hold full registration with a licence to practice on the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Demonstrate professional knowledge gained through accredited courses, workshops, study and in‑house training programmes.
* Be responsible and accountable for service delivery to clients/patients.
* Assess and develop care plans meeting complex needs of patients across chronic, acute and palliative care within own competencies, recognising limitations and seeking advice when necessary.
* Initiate referrals to other health professional specialist services and agencies.
* Provide patients and relatives with information and education, ensuring meaningful choices that promote dignity, independence and quality of life.
* Ensure practice is supported by research, evidence‑based practice, literature and peer review.
Training & Supervision
* Act as clinical supervisor to junior colleagues, providing effective education, facilitating development and promoting high standards of medical care.
* Support junior colleagues to achieve learning needs.
* Sustain own continued professional development and foster a culture of lifelong learning.
* Assist in planning mandatory training and workshops.
* Undertake regular appraisal, developing a personal development plan that reflects clinical competencies, local population health needs and Trust strategy.
* Support new staff integration within the team.
* Support training as part of the role, including changes to professional development and implementation of new policies and guidelines.
Administration
* Follow good medical practice standards in documenting all assessments and sharing information with other health professionals.
* Provide reports on time.
* Ensure letters and summaries are checked and sent promptly to referring GPs, colleagues and agencies.
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of all clinical activity.
* Use Trust’s electronic case record system, with good IT skills.
Leadership
* Participate in development of an effective team and productive working relationships throughout the Trust.
* Promote professional integrated health working internally and externally.
* Facilitate positive and supportive team culture, managing conflict effectively.
* Take interest in working parties and groups to improve service delivery, protocols and guidelines.
* Participate in audit process, linking to clinical governance agenda.
* Advise, encourage and share knowledge, leveraging latest research and practice development through literature and peer reviews.
* Support the AMD in strategic service development and business planning.
