Graduate Civil Engineer – Environment Agency
As a Graduate Civil Engineer you will be part of the Environment Agency’s Graduate Training Scheme, a structured, hands‑on programme spanning 4–5 years that gives you the skills, experience and opportunities to become a future leader within the Agency.
Program Overview
The training scheme is recognised as one of the top graduate employers. You will experience a series of 6–12 month rotations across a wide range of teams – from asset management and strategic planning to site supervision and flood defence engineering projects. Each rotation provides a holistic understanding of the Agency’s core work, including collaboration with specialists in Modelling and Forecasting, Natural Flood Management, National Fisheries Service and Health and Safety.
* Diverse Placements: 6–12 month rotations across diverse teams.
* Flexible Pathways: Tailored learning journeys aligned with your interests, whether that is geotechnics, hydraulics, or project logistics.
* Learning & Development: Accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The programme guides you toward Incorporated (IEng) and Chartered (CEng) status.
Key Responsibilities
You will be involved in:
* Designing and delivering solutions for flood protection and environmental sustainability.
* Co‑ordinating with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders on civil engineering projects.
* Managing project budgets, schedules and delivery to meet deadlines.
* Conducting site inspections and risk assessments to support incident response duties.
Qualifications & Requirements
* Qualified graduate with an accredited BEng or, preferably, MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
* Degree and master’s programmes accredited by ICE for IEng and CEng status.
* Full UK driving licence required within 6 months of starting.
* Hybrid working arrangements – some travel to flood defence assets and team meetings is required.
