Job Summary
An exciting opportunity within the Tobacco Dependence Team at Kings College Hospital. The role supports the delivery of Tobacco Dependence Treatment across several pathways, including the Emergency Department, inpatient wards, and pre‑operative care. The successful candidate will provide behavioural interventions to help patients achieve and maintain long‑term abstinence.
Responsibilities
The position involves treating admitted inpatients for tobacco dependence during their hospital stay, a standard of care in the NHS. The post holder will:
* Deliver evidence‑based tobacco dependence treatment in accordance with Department of Health, NICE and NCSCT guidance.
* Provide tobacco dependence advice and support to patients in the Emergency Department, elective surgery clinics, and inpatient wards.
* Work closely with local Stop Smoking Services and multidisciplinary teams to ensure appropriate support is integrated into the patients care pathway.
* Assess inpatients tobacco dependence, devise treatment plans with support from Tobacco Dependence Specialists, and ensure treatment continues throughout the hospital stay and after discharge.
* Carry out comprehensive assessments, administer correct pharmacotherapies, and document interventions.
* Maintain continuity of care when patients are transferred to different wards or specialties.
* Provide remote, telephone or health‑app based support to patients after discharge.
* Offer support and encouragement to staff and non‑smoking patients who lack confidence in remaining smoke‑free.
* Manage a caseload of patients independently and prioritise their needs.
* Contribute to the ongoing development, monitoring and evaluation of the tobacco dependence treatment team, and assist TDT Specialists in analysing service outcome data.
* Participate in national campaigns such as Stoptober, Lung Cancer Awareness and No Smoking Day.
Requirements
* Educated to degree level or equivalent.
* National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) Certified Stop Smoking Practitioner.
* Knowledge of tobacco dependence treatment and evidence base.
* Patient‑facing work experience in a relevant discipline (behaviour change, health promotion, patient support, etc.).
* Experience of delivering tobacco dependence advice and support.
* Adaptable to different working situations and able to handle people of all capabilities and attitudes.
* Ability to work in a sensitive manner with patients and across a culturally and racially diverse population.
* Willingness and ability to work across sites if required to ensure service delivery.
* Desirable: Experience of supporting training delivery to a range of health professionals.
* Desirable: Experience of providing telephone‑based support/interventions.
* Desirable: Evidence of previous effective team working.
Location & Employment Details
Band 5, Permanent contract, Part‑time 30 hours per week (Monday–Friday). Salary £36,943 to £44,900 per annum pro rata, including Health Care Assistant. Job locations: Princess Royal University Hospital – Farnborough Common, Orpington, BR6 8ND, United Kingdom.
