Job Summary
People who use our services are from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of needs including mental health, learning disabilities or dementia. As a support worker you will work closely with individuals, enabling them to live their lives with support from a multidisciplinary team of nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers and doctors. We will offer an induction into the SHSC and local induction into the area you will be supporting. Training will enhance your skills to feel confident in your role and will continue throughout your employment.
You will be part of a multi‑disciplinary team and will be expected to support individuals with all aspects of care, including personal care, supporting in providing nutritional intake and ensuring that all personal needs are met.
Responsibilities
* Ensure positive approaches to patient engagement.
* Communicate effectively with other members of the team about patient presentations, progress against recovery plans and general concerns.
* Implement elements of the patient's plan of care as delegated by the named nurse or nurse in charge.
* Contribute to ongoing risk assessment progress, monitoring, observing, and engaging with patients.
* Provide a positive approach to responding to patients in acute distress, adopting principles of diffusion and de‑escalation.
* Support patients with medication regimes, providing encouragement and relevant information.
* Assist in daily activities of living and supporting patients to meet dietary needs during the 24‑hour period.
* Escort patients on leave from the ward, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
* Participate in supervision and annual personal development reviews, undertaking essential training as required.
* Document patient presentation and progress in nursing notes, ensuring counter‑signing by a registered nurse.
* Assist medical staff with routine examinations and specimen collection.
* Respond to spillages of waste or bodily fluids in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
* Assist in the stripping, cleaning, and making of beds and safe disposal of soiled linen.
* Undertake practical tasks in support of the ward team and patient needs.
Qualifications
Essential
* GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English (functional skills level / ENIC)
* Health & Social Care qualification
Desirable
* Care Certificate / Health & Social Care Diploma (levels 2 or 3)
* GCSE Grade A‑C / 4‑9 or equivalent in Maths and English
Experience
Essential
* Experience of working in care services or similar areas.
* Experience of issues relating to providing care to others.
Knowledge
Essential
* Awareness or insight into issues relating to mental health.
* Awareness of issues relating to providing care to patients.
Desirable
* Knowledge/Experience of mental health services as a service user/carer/employee/volunteer.
