Overview
A full-time post as consultant in paediatric surgery with on-call paediatric surgery and urology commitments is available at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a substantive Consultant post. The Trust comprises four hospitals: John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (Headington), and the Horton General Hospital (Banbury). The base site is the John Radcliffe Hospital (JR), Oxfordshire's main accident and emergency site, offering acute medical and surgical services including trauma, intensive care and cardiothoracic services. The post-holder will be expected to travel to different sites within the Trust as needed.
The Trust collaborates with the University of Oxford to support high-quality care, research, education and training of doctors. The department invites candidates to visit the hospital and contact the paediatric surgery team for further information.
Responsibilities
* The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the Surgical Elective Centre and the West Wing at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with willingness to work at any of the Trust’s locations.
* Provide tertiary level paediatric surgical care and contribute to acute general and neonatal surgery as part of the acute rota (1:7.5).
* Collaborate with paediatric surgery and urology teams, including clinical nurse specialists, to deliver high-level care for children and families regionally and beyond.
* Receive clinical support from trainees, trust doctors and foundation doctors in delivering care.
* Travel to sites such as Horton Hospital, Chipping Norton and Northampton Hospital within the ODN for theatre sessions and clinics; travel time will be permitted.
Teaching, Research and Governance
* Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust; the post-holder is expected to participate in teaching clinical students and training junior doctors, with clinical examinations as part of everyday activity.
* The post-holder’s contributions to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
* Participation in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement and external accreditation as required by the Trust.
Professional Development and Management
* Maintain up-to-date practice in the relevant area and demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust; professional or study leave may be granted in line with Terms and Conditions of Service.
* Work within the Trust’s management policies, accepting finite resources and obtaining prior agreement for changes in clinical practice, workload or resource requirements.
* Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and the running of the clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate lead.
