Offer description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Biomedical Scientist to join our Clinical Biochemistry team at Basildon University Hospital, Southend university hospital and Hub site. There will be a mixture of twelve-hour nights, twelve-hour days, and eight-hour earlies, lates and days. The environment is fast paced offering a one hour turnaround time to acute users, two hours for inpatients and four hours for community requests.

External applicants can earn up to £37,796 per annum depending on qualifications and experience and subject to agreement. As a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist (Band 5 with significant post registration laboratory experience who is working on their Specialist Portfolio) you may be entitled to £5,000 joining bonus. All staff will be eligible for a wellbeing allowance of £1,500 per annum.

Pathology First operates over three sites using a hub and spoke model. Our hub site offers a high throughput service for our non-urgent community work, and specialist testing for specific proteins. Our two hospital laboratories at Southend and Basildon provide urgent testing for acute admissions and inpatients. This role is mainly based in Basildon but will involve rotating across sites. Our laboratories receive approximately 1.2 million clinical biochemistry requests per year, on which we do approximately 12 million tests. The main analyser platforms are Beckman Coulter, fully tracked at the hub laboratory, backed up with Roche. The hospital repertoire includes CO2, lactate, osmolality, ammonia, bile acids, troponin T, BNP, xanthochromia, haematinics, therapeutic drugs, thyroid hormones, procalcitonin, prolactin, BHCG and cortisol. The hub laboratory repertoire is more extensive with three different immunoassay platforms. The main IT platform for all sites is Clinisys WinPath Enterprise.

Responsibilities

You will need to be flexible to fit in with our multi-site, around the clock shift pattern (unsocial shifts attract additional payments). Following appropriate training you will independently validate common clinical biochemistry investigations. You will learn to be conversant with the main laboratory information management system and middle-ware applications. We will consider supporting suitable employees through the IBMS specialist diploma.

* Be able to rotate through all areas of the laboratory required (dependent on qualifications, experience and training) performing all designated duties in accordance with local working practices whilst maintaining high Professional standards and conforming to Health and Safety regulations.
* Maintain the standards of conduct required by the HPC to practice as a registered Biomedical Scientist.
* Provide specialist technical advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.
* Perform routine and specialist biomedical investigations and participate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory section, which may include specimen reception functions, under the supervision of Senior Biomedical Scientists.
* Participate in and assist with clinical trials, the development of new tests and research & validation of equipment ensuring at all times compliance with all policies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management policies and practices. Propose changes to standard operating procedures as required in order to develop and streamline the service or to reflect other changes.
* Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory.
* Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate. Matters being communicated may include complex information and/or results.
* Attend and participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed by Laboratory managers
* As directed by senior laboratory staff, plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of both yourself and junior staff, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities.
* Provide supervision, training and professional leadership to junior staff which includes monitoring their performance against laboratory standards and their training plans.
* Encourage active participation in continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and / or systems by being a change advocate, and active mentor and a tutor to junior staff.
* Use consumables and equipment within your allocated section responsibility and be responsible for stock control audits and recording through approved channels as required.
* Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff and enter the information in the CAPA module of Q-pulse in a timely manner as directed by senior staff.

Qualifications

* HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist
* Able to work across three sites as required, including hospitals which operate 24 hours
* Able to work with a high degree of accuracy and numeracy; good interpretive and problem-solving skills
