Our Brockington Parent and Baby Unit is welcoming applications to their post of Consultant in Perinatal Psychiatry in Stafford.
The Brockington Parent and Baby Unit is located within the grounds of St George’s Hospital. This is an 8-bed unit which accepts referrals locally, regionally and nationally.
MPFT are the lead provider for the West Midlands Perinatal Provider Collaborative and Brockington Parent and Baby Unit is one of two inpatient units. Therefore, the Consultant will play an integral role in shaping this development.
You will be responsible for providing specialist mental health services to pregnant and postnatal women on the Brockington Parent and Baby Unit based at St George’s Hospital in Stafford. You will take responsibility for all admitted patients.
The unit works as part of a whole Perinatal Service incorporating two perinatal community teams across South Staffordshire and Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin as well as, a maternal mental health service.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post consist of the following:
* Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and management of issues relating to mental and physical health for acutely ill adult female inpatients and their infants. You will take responsibility for patients who are detained under a section of the Mental Health Act (1983), consider the patient’s capacity and consent to treatment at all times and ensure all care planning is completed in line with legal documentation. All clinical work will be done in the context of the trauma informed and recovery approach, placing the service user at the centre of the planning and decision making. The consultant will be available to review patients and attend the community MDT.
* Provide clinical leadership to the community / outpatient / liaison perinatal mental health team as required.
* Provide pre-pregnancy counselling to women referred to the service from within the Trust catchment area.
* Lead on the delivery of high-quality care in all settings and to be mindful of quality targets set by the Trust and those set nationally.
* To carry out the clinical duties within this post, it is a requirement that the post holder can understand the prediction, detection, prevention and management of mental disorder in pregnant and postnatal women, the inter relationship between mental disorder and pregnancy and the postpartum period, and the wider effects of mental disorder on child development and the mother-infant relationship.
