JDR Recruitment are recruiting for a Transport Planner to join our clients team based in Weston Super Mare.
The role:
As a Transport planner, your responsibilities will be to manage the daily and weekly schedules of approximately 100 vehicles and 60 drivers. The role requires meticulous resource management, balancing the teams needs ensuring strict compliance under EU and UK transport legislation.
Create and manage schedules : You will develop and implement daily and weekly schedules for vehicles and drivers to ensure operational efficiency.
Manage real-time demands : Respond to and handle changes, issues, and unexpected events during the workday, such as re-directing drivers to new or urgent jobs.
Ensure legal compliance : Guarantee that all scheduling adheres to EU and UK transport regulations, including drivers' hours, working time directives, and break requirements.
Handle information handover : Conduct crucial daily handovers with the Operations Manager and Supervisor team to ensure continuity of coverage and incident control.
Utilise technology : Use fleet management software and other IT systems to track and monitor vehicles, plan routes, and record data.
Analyse and report on data : Monitor fleet performance metrics, like fuel consumption and driver behaviour, to identify opportunities for improvement and report findings to management.
Oversee vehicle maintenance : Assist in scheduling vehicle maintenance and repairs to minimise downtime and ensure the fleet is roadworthy.
Support the operations team : Collaborate with colleagues by managing core scheduling tasks and assisting with other operational requirements.
About you:
As an experienced Transport Planner, you will have the following skills and experience:
Proven, hands-on experience in a fleet scheduling, transport coordination, or logistics planning role, ideally managing operations of a similar scale (e.g., 100+ vehicles / 60+ staff) within the PSV or commercial transport sector as there's transferrable skills from both sectors which will be beneficial for this role.
Legal Knowledge : Demonstrable, expert knowledge of UK and EU transport legislation, particularly the complex requirements of EU driver hours and the Working Time Directive (WTD). • Analytical Aptitude: A strong analytical mindset with the capacity to interpret performance data and solve complex resource allocation problems in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
Technical Proficiency : High level of proficiency with transport management and scheduling software used in the PSV sector. Experience with other transport management systems is preferable.
Organisational Skill : Exceptional organisational skills with the capacity to manage complex, competing priorities under high pressure.
Communication : Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to effectively resolve conflicts and integrate seamlessly into a team structure.
Detail Orientation : Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy is mandatory for all compliance and scheduling tasks.
Desirable attributes
Software Experience : Experience working with Distinctive, our bespoke transport management and scheduling software, is a strong advantage.
Qualifications : Possession of a Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or a relevant degree/NVQ in logistics or transport management.
