We have an exciting opportunity for a Permanent, Full Time, Tenancy Sustainment Officer to join Southampton City Council (SCC) in the Homelessness Service.
About The Team
The post holder will work within the Homelessness Unit, delivering prevention and relief of homelessness, managing accommodation for homeless households and discharging duties under the Housing Act 1996 / Homelessness Act 2002 Part 7 and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
Responsibilities
* Conduct initial assessments to identify tenants’ needs and vulnerabilities.
* Deliver personalized support based on the household’s needs.
* Provide ongoing support and advice on tenancy rights and responsibilities.
* Assist tenants with rent payments, benefit claims, and budgeting.
* Mediate disputes between tenants and landlords.
* Advise tenants on how to maintain their homes and resolve property‑related issues.
* Identify potential tenancy breakdowns and take proactive steps to prevent homelessness.
* Provide early intervention and support to tenants at risk of eviction.
* Develop and implement strategies to reduce tenancy breakdowns.
* Build strong relationships with landlords, housing associations, relevant agencies and emergency accommodation providers.
* Collaborate with other professionals to provide holistic support to tenants.
* Represent the organization at local and regional housing forums.
* Maintain accurate records of client interactions, interventions, and outcomes.
* Collect and analyse data to inform service delivery and identify trends.
* Prepare reports on the effectiveness of tenancy sustainment interventions.
Qualifications & Skills
* Experience with manual and electronic filing systems.
* Strong telephone and written communication skills.
* Excellent customer care orientation.
* Teamwork and collaboration skills.
* Understanding of equality issues and how they affect the workplace and individuals.
* High level of IT literacy (Microsoft Office, digital platforms).
* Confidence to support and challenge families who have experienced homelessness trauma.
* Understanding of tenants’ complex needs and aspirations.
* Ability to compose clear and concise letters, memos, reports, and file notes.
* Competently work as a lone worker.
* Awareness of and adherence to health and safety guidance.
* Knowledge of homelessness legislation and the benefits system.
Salary and Benefits
Salary band: £32,061 – £36,362, starting salary £32,061 with annual progression.
