An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Nurse Practitioner to work within HMP Inverness to cover maternity leave until 3rd April 2026.
Under the supervision of senior nursing colleagues you will assist in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating evidence informed care in line with national and local guidelines. You will provide individualised care and support to people who have primary care health needs as well as those who may require more complex case management.
You will practice within relevant generic national and local standards to provide safe and effective nursing care to individuals in a prison setting, as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
As a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner you will coordinate and manage services, engaging in multidisciplinary and multi agency team working and partnership including with Scottish Prison Service (SPS) colleagues. You will operate as a registered nurse in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and demonstrate leadership skills and accountability in a nurse-led service within a multi-disciplinary custodial setting. Within this role you will be providing emergency and anticipatory care, promoting wellbeing, and addressing health inequalities as well as contributing to the continuous development of Healthcare Services.
As part of the Multi Disciplinary Team you will assist patients to achieve optimum health and well being this will include, taking account of patient choice, identifying any recommended changes in lifestyle and promoting self care. You will be responsible for running nurse led clinics, e.g., asthma, diabetic, BBV, tissue viability, well man, sexual health etc. You will provide clinical input to the multi-disciplinary referral allocation, assessment and post assessment decision making to ensure accurate, effective, and sensitive feedback to all referring agencies. As a first responder you will manage emergency situations where there is high risk to the wellbeing of prisoners and staff. Administration and monitoring of medicines including controlled drugs is a daily part of this role.
You will at times participate in the Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Recovery interventions within the Health Centre including attending meetings and being involved with the SPS suicide prevention strategy (Talk to Me).
You may also participate in the planning and facilitation of therapeutic group activities in collaboration with other professionals.
The post holder will have regular managerial supervision from the Team Lead on all aspects of their role.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
